Councilmember Julia Patterson, after 23 years of service,
will not seek re-election; "Rep. David Upthegrove would be a good choice" tells KUOW

Press release:

Metropolitan King County Council Vice-Chair Julia Patterson announced Friday, April 26 she will not seek a fourth term on the King County Council, ending 23 years of public service to South King County.

While not an official enforcement, she told KUOW radio she believes Rep. David Upthegrove would be a good choice to replace her.

Patterson’s public service began in 1989 with her role in the incorporation effort of a new city in suburban south King County.

Patterson at that time was a stay-at-home mom turned citizen activist due to the fact that King County was ignoring the needs of her community, including crime on Highway 99 and neighborhood impacts from the airport.

When the city of SeaTac was incorporated in 1989, Patterson was elected as a founding member of its first City Council.

That spirit of activism drove Patterson to seek appointment to the State Legislature, where she represented the 33rd District in the State House and the State Senate for close to a decade.

While serving in Olympia, Patterson championed legislation that resulted in election reform and lower class sizes in schools.

Play the 'Check-out Sunday Challenge' May 5 at the Delridge branch of Seattle Public Library.

information from the Seattle Public Library

For the first time in at least a century, all locations of The Seattle Public Library will be open on Sunday in 2013. Expanded operating hours are being funded by a levy approved by voters in August.

Fifteen branches currently closed on Sunday will join 11 other branches in opening their doors every Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. beginning Sunday, Jan. 6. In addition, the Columbia and Northgate branches will be open seven days a week beginning in 2013.

"At community meetings and through patron surveys, we heard that Sunday hours were important," City Librarian Marcellus Turner said. "Particularly for families, working people and students, having Library service available in every neighborhood on Sunday will be a huge benefit."

Each branch with new Sunday hours will host a special celebration on a Sunday (dates and locations listed below) from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. between Jan. 6 and May 5. Each celebration will feature a children's craft activity, refreshments and an opportunity to participate in the Check-Out Sundays Challenge.

Ballard students showcase films at NFFTY this weekend

Since the National Film Festival for Talented Youth was started in 2007 by Ballard High School alumni Jesse Harris and Kyle Seago (along with Bellevue High School alumna Jocelyn RC), it has grown into the world's largest film festival for youth, featuring a total of over 1,000 films.

"That's a thousand films that, in many instances, may not have otherwise been seen by large festival audiences and a thousand filmmakers that would not have met each other," Harris said in front of a packed audience for the festival's grand opening at the Cinerama.

Harris went on to say how important the festival was for youth in making connections, bringing their stories to the world and making a support network of filmmakers throughout the world.

Harris, who was part of the BHS film program and first made a feature film at the age of 17, realized the need to support young filmmakers.

"I was a filmmaker trying to get into film festivals and it was really hard," he said. "...I wanted to make their voices heard. A youth festival like this can do that."

National Drug Take Back Day this Saturday

Got drugs and don't want 'em? Don't worry, you can get rid of 'em.

On Saturday, April 27, its National Drug Take Back Day. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Seattle Police Department and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will allow the public to rid their homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. All of the precincts, including the North Precinct (10049 College Way N), will be accepting unwanted drugs -- completely free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Find out which one is closest by visiting SPD's precinct map page at http://www.seattle.gov/police/maps/precinct_map.htm and clicking on one of the precinct icons.

Last September was a huge success. Americans turned in 244 tons of prescription drugs at over 5,200 sites operated by the DEA and local law enforcement partners. So far, in the five previous events, the total has amounted to over 2 million pounds -- over a thousand tons -- of pills.

SPS Superintendent Banda comments on seniors not meeting State math requirements

Banda says SPS will not ask State for a waiver of of requirements

The following letter was sent from from Seattle Public Schools Superintendent José Banda to high school principals to illustrate concern over seniors who are not meeting the State's graduation requirements for math. HIs letter follows:

Dear Seattle Public School students and families,

Ensuring our students are able to graduate from high school prepared for college, career and life is at the core of what we do at Seattle Public Schools. Graduation is so important, and we are concerned about the approximately 80 seniors that have completed all of the graduation requirements -- except for meeting standards on either the End of Course Algebra or Geometry Exam.

The graduating class of 2013 is the first in Washington State history to have this new mathematics test as part of the state graduation requirements. Since these students entered high school, the assessment has changed from a Mathematics High School Proficiency Exam to an End of Course Exam, and the standards addressed by the assessment have been adjusted.
