Angels ascend to No. 1

Pac West conducted its Junior Little League baseball tournament championship at its field complex in SeaTac with the Angels completing an unbeaten run through the tournament by defeating the Pirates 7-2 on Thursday, June 6. The Pirates defeated the Athletics 1-0 to gain the championship's final round with its one loss earlier in the tourney.

Following two complete scoreless innings, the flying Angels winged into the lead in the top of the third inning. Andrew Gilpatrick led off by flipping a pop fly double just over the right side of the infield before advancing to third base on a wild pitch. On a 3-and-2 count, Alex Ponce finally got ball four to reach first base and soon moved up to second base unchallenged during the next batter's plate appearance. A fly ball out failed to advance the runners, but Chris Coyle drew a walk to load the bases for Jake Whitman's run-scoring sacrifice fly to center field.

Richmond running for Burien council seat

Robert L. Richmond III has announced his candidacy for the Burien City Council.

Here is his press release:

My name is Robert L. Richmond, III and I am running for Burien City Council Position # 3.

I am running because I have noticed that it appears that the City Council has run out of ideas, except annexation.

I would appreciate the opportunity to present a few ideas to the public so that we can begin to become a self – sufficient city.
I would like to bring the 4H Headquarters to the City of Burien and help build the foundation for Urban Farming. We need to teach our kids early on about eating healthy. 4H also offers opportunities in the subjects of robotics, engineering, and computer science.

I propose working with Washington State University to bring an Athletic and Science facility to the City of Burien.

I intend to be aggressive and look for an “Anchor Tenant” to partner with the city to bring in high paying jobs. Burien is OPEN for business!

I just have a few questions for the incumbent: What is taking so long to make 1st Ave passable? Why are there so many empty storefronts? Why do we not host major adult sporting events?

McGinn: Sound Transit will study light rail feasibility from West Seattle to downtown this summer

Light rail service to West Seattle still has a shot, according to Mayor Mike McGinn, but don’t expect it anytime in the next decade.

In 2009, then-mayoral candidate McGinn told Erica C. Barnett with Publicola, “… Within two years of taking office, I commit to bringing a plan before voters of Seattle to bring expanded light rail service to neighborhoods (including West Seattle).”

As we say, “Life got in the way,” as the economy tanked, city council resisted the vote, and Seattle’s Department of Transportation Transit Master Plan, released in 2011, put the West Seattle corridor well down the list of top priorities for major people-moving improvements.

This week, Mayor McGinn reached out to local media for a sit down at Diva Espresso to update our readers on where the possibility of light rail service from the West Seattle to downtown stands. It's an issue still on his mind, and that of many West Seattle commuters.

Fred is dead

Car burns into crisp in middle of night, owners at loss

A car shooting up into flames is generally not a good thing for anyone.

For the owners of the car that burned up last night on 65th Ave NW across from the Ballard High School, however, it's like twisting the knife after being stabbed.

The owners happen to be the former owners of Nellie's Coffee and Toast, Jeannette Meade and Todd McCallister, who are still in limbo after a questionable end of their lease with the Ballard Lockspot. While they have a lead on a new lease, they find themselves running out of money. One of their only hopes, an arrangement with their friend Ben at Benito's delivering pizzas, is dashed now that their car "Fred" is, well, dead.

Around 1 a.m. last night, McCallister moved his car to his parking spot on the street (which had been taken up by a car he didn't recognize) and went back into his home. It wasn't 10 or 15 minutes before he heard something like a door slam and he went outside to see his car in flames.

Tacos in the Park returns Friday for White Center's homeless

Tacos in the Park, the program to provide a good meal to the White Center homeless population this summer happens again this Friday. Union Gospel Mission is assisting in coordinating the event. The meals are served free of charge outdoors at Steve Cox Memorial Park 1321 SW 102nd St.

Tacos are scheduled for every second Friday of the month at noon. In June, tacos are planned for Friday, June 14 (Flag Day), again on Friday July 12, and again on Friday August, 9, 2013. Taco Time Northwest continues to support the effort.

A second church group from a Burien church has expanded its lunch outreach to the White Center homeless population on two Saturdays each month, and Holy Family (from Seattle) continues their outreach and free lunch on one Saturday each month. The homeless feeding effort continues to average over 40 participants, and they serve over 100 tacos during the 90 minute event.

White Center business owners are encouraged to send the homeless from their block to the free lunch next Friday.
