Ballard High students strut their stuff for charity fashion show

Last Friday, Ballard High School students strutted their stuff to benefit the nonprofit Treehouse, which supports foster-care youth, for the first ever Stylin' and Sharing fashion show.

Earlier, we spoke with the mastermind behind the event, Ballard High junior Celia Major, who was inspired by friends and the "We Day" event to do something good for the local community. She said the event was a success: a fair amount of money was donated, a large load of clothes was brought to Treehouse's Wearhouse and the kids had fun. She said she hoped next year goes better.

Almost all the models were Ballard High School students and they were taught beforehand how to walk by professional model Michael Delk. Photographer Lauren Capone (https://www.facebook.com/LaurenCaponePhotography) was on the scene taking pictures. Click the main picture above or the thumbnails below to scroll through the slideshow.

Ballard students, supporters and survivors raise funds at Relay for Life

By Elizabeth Wang

The Relay for Life of Northwest Seattle at Whitman Middle School brought in 27 teams and 228 participants to walk, run and raise money that will all be donated to the American Cancer Society.

The 16-hour marathon over June 1-2 featured events like team parades, lawn games, guest speakers such as 36-D Rep. Gael Tarleton and Carson Wiggs of the Seattle Seahawks, as well as the traditional survivors’ lap.

With over 1.66 million cases of cancer projected for 2013, according to the American Cancer Society, “the Big C” has become a disease that has touched almost everyone in one way or another.

Cindy Lange, who joined the Windemere Walkers team, kept thoughts of her friend and her mother in mind as she walked the track. Her friend is a mother of a 37-year-old son, who is currently suffering from brain and lung cancer. He had fought to overcome the disease a few years ago, but this time around proved less fortunate for the family. Lange’s friend decided to move back home to Texas and put her life on hold to spend time with her son.

How to build collagen with every bite

By Holly Brown

Mirror, mirror on the wall, what the heck is happening?! According to www.LiveStrong.com, the plump and healthy looking skin we enjoy in our youth is from collagen, and elastin, stored in our bodies. Collagen forms connective tissues such as tendons and ligaments, and gives young skin its smooth texture and resilience. Elastin is a protein also found in connective tissues, and provides the flexibility to structures such as skin, cartilage, and arteries.

Unfortunately, these important proteins are depleted as we get older, causing wrinkles and other visible signs of aging we see looking back at us in the mirror. The good news is you can build collagen and elastin with every bite, by serving meals containing ingredients that keep production levels of these key proteins up.

Ingredients like leafy greens, citrus, soy, and seafood all contribute to the beauty and health of your skin.

Here’s why:

The Kenney has a letter of intent for sponsorship from Wesley Homes in Des Moines

Wesley Homes, based in Des Moines, Washington presented a letter of intent to further explore sponsorship of The Kenney in West Seattle.

Wesley Homes operates two facilities in Des Moines and Auburn with plans for Puyallup and Renton in the future. They were founded in 1944. It is affiliated with the Pacific Northwest Conference of the United Methodist Church.

The letter of intent was presented to and accepted by The Kenney board of directors on June 4, 2013. In a press release from The Kenney they said, "It is the next step in the process of completing due diligence before Wesley Homes makes a decision to become the new non-profit sponsor. Due diligence typically involves an in-depth review of the operations, physical plant, legal issues and finances, including discussions with the bank lender. The due diligence is expected to take several weeks."

Ellen Boyer, COO for Wesley Homes said, "What we really want to do is serve seniors in our community and we believe that extending to the West Seattle area would be a good fit with not only our mission but our strategy."

Madison MS serves as Mayor’s platform to unveil student dental health plan

Your tax dollars could mean a healthy smile and pain-free mouth for several Seattle students in coming years.

On June 4, Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn visited Madison Middle School in West Seattle to announce $274,680 from Families and Education Levy funds will be used to set up onsite dental screening facilities at 11 Seattle schools next year. The selection of schools is still in the works, but the City, in partnership with Neighborcare (who will administer the care), is targeting schools with low-income student populations who could most benefit.

Madison was chosen as the site to unveil the program because they already have a dental facility up and running, acting as a pilot for Neighborcare to expand.

McGinn opened his remarks with a number of realities, including the fact that low-income students are far less likely to have access to dental care outside of school, and that researchers have found links between children living with tooth pain and declining school performance.

This program, he said, “is just another way in which we in the city can help support our kids and our families.”

Seattle Firefighters will read to kids at neighborhood libraries this summer

Information from the Seattle Fire Department

This summer Seattle Firefighters will be reading to kids at library branches throughout the City. The Seattle Fire Department and Seattle Public Library are partnering to host seven firefighter story times in June and July.

The West Seattle visit is set for June 13.
Delridge Branch 5423 Delridge Way S.W. Thursday June 13 @ 11:30 a.m.

“This is a chance for firefighters to meet our youngest community members and educate them on how to protect themselves and their families during a fire,” said Fire Chief Gregory Dean.

For more than a decade, Seattle firefighters have volunteered for literacy events at local branch libraries.

“The firefighter story times are among our most popular literacy programs for preschoolers,” said City Librarian Marcellus Turner. “We appreciate the firefighters volunteering their time each year to support libraries and reading. It’s a wonderful opportunity for some of our youngest patrons to learn about fire safety and the work that our brave firefighters do every day.”
