Burien City Council appoints Justin West to Business & Economic Development Partnership advisory board

By Matt Wendland

Justin West is now the newest member of the Burien City Council’s Business and Economic Development Partnership (BEDP) advisory board, after being appointed by the Council with a unanimous vote on January 6th.

The BEDP is a 14 member board established to provide guidance and direction to the Burien City Council on the City’s future economic development programs and priorities. Each member of the advisory board was appointed by the City Council to fulfill four year terms. In 2011 the City Council enacted a new policy that established term limits for their advisory boards which limited advisors to two consecutive four year terms. As nearly every member of the BEDP at the time had been serving on the advisory board for well over two term limits, a large number of new members have been appointed since then.

SLIDESHOW: Short-handed Tyee hangs on against Evergreen

SEATAC--Even the officials wound up undermanned in this game.

One of the three left in an ambulance with chest pains with 4:27 to play in the second quarter of Friday's girls basketball game between Tyee and Evergreen in the Totems' home gymnasium, and Tyee started off the game short-handed with only five players suited up.

The Totems still built up big leads on Evergreen of White Center, then had to hang on as the Wolverines battled back against four and then only three Tyee players.

Tyee had a 39-30 advantage when Keyara Brooks fouled out with 3:02 remaining in the game, and the lead was whittled to 45-40 before Khalya Guy fouled out with 20 seconds left.

Marleisha Cox of Evergreen then scored on her own putback to make it 45-42 with 10 seconds remaining.

Cox went to the foul line with four seconds left and missed both shots, then her team got the ball back on an out of bounds play with two ticks of the clock remaining.

Stephanie Herrera of the Wolverines then missed a three-point shot as time expired to preserve a 45-42 win for the Totems.

Jerry's View: Is there a dog heaven?

Mack, my beautiful Border Collie was actually my second dog. I had "Boots"  a mutt of mixed breed who we lost in a horrific traffic accident near Astoria, Oregon in 1927. Dad's car was cut in half by a wayward driver, in the rain. Boots was riding with me and my baby sister Norma, in the back seat. The car was cut in two with both halves ending up on the side of the road. The chassis just split, leaving us sprawled up in the back half, unharmed. Mom and dad were up front, also basically unharmed. Boots was gone, never to be found.

Months later we got Mack. A wonder dog who was quite smart. I don't recall how we got him but he was already grown up when he appeared at our door step. In those days, there may have been more stray dogs than people, so it was easy to adopt a pet simply by leaving a dish of food out on the porch. Maybe Mack was a visitor who stayed. We loved him and he loved our stray cat, Nicodemus "cheesebomber". Aptly named as it had the peculiar habit of passing gas on a constant basis, possibly because we often fed it table scraps, including moldy cheese.

Police Blotter 1-13-14

Maced
An officer was flagged down on the 8800 block of 16 Ave SW by a victim who had just been sprayed with mace. The victim was walking home just before 10 p.m. when a person jumped out of a bush and sprayed the victim with mace and ran off. The victim managed to flag the officer down only minutes afterward. The victim could not provide any description whatsoever of the suspect and has no idea why someone would do this. When taken home by the fire department the victim was advised to shower and rinse his eyes thoroughly. The suspect remains at large.

The Run Around
On the 3rd of January police received multiple calls regarding a near hit and run on Delridge WY SW at about 6 p.m. The suspect was driving a 1995 blue Honda coupe and was seen (by witnesses and later by police via a nearby surveillance camera) to be having a heated argument with the victim on the street. During this argument the suspect made gestures to indicate he may have a gun and was seen to be looking around nervously as if for witnesses.

Family and friends desperate for information on New Year’s murder

By Tim Clifford

“This family is totally, completely numb; in a total state-of-shock...however, we trust God and we are a very strong family” says Renae Brooks of the aftermath for her family after the New Year’s Eve murder of her nephew Stephen Jeffries.

Brooks has been pushing for media exposure on this case in the hopes of getting any information and has an account called “Journey for Justice” at gofundme.com that is asking for tips and donations. “Steven did not have the demeanor where anyone could nor would begrudge him” says Brooks when asked if she knew of anyone who could have had a motive to harm Jeffries.

Jeffries, a father to four daughters and an employee with the Public Works department of the city of Seattle for nearly two decades, was shot twice at a party on New Year’s eve and died shortly after police and paramedics took him to Harbor View Medical Center. A 33-year-old woman was also shot at the same time and survived. Despite the large number of people who were present at the party there is still no information on what happened that night or why.
