South Seattle Community College to Commemorate Japanese American Day of Remembrance

February 13, 2014: SEATTLE – South Seattle Community College announced today the school will hold their Japanese American Day of Remembrance event on Feb. 20 with a screening of filmmaker Frank Abe’s “Conscience and the Constitution” at 11 AM in the Jerry Brockey Student Center. A discussion of the film will immediately follow. The event is free and open to all.

Abe’s film tells the true World War II-era story of a group of young Japanese Americans who refused to be drafted into the war from their Wyoming internment camp unless their rights as U.S. citizens were restored and their families were released. The U.S. government ordered the internment of over 110,000 people of Japanese heritage in the aftermath of the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941.

“The film shows the price one pays for taking a principled stand,” Abe said. “It’s also about two responses to injustice: collaboration or resistance. The resisters broke the law to clarify the rights of all Japanese Americans in camp, yet they not only served two years in prison, they spent 50 years as pariahs in our own community.”

SLIDESHOW: West Seattle girls battle Holy Names in a nail-biter Metro tournament game

By Paul Moseley

The West Seattle Wildcats proved they belong among the best teams in the State tonight.

The 13-8 Wildcats (10-5 conference) took on the 17-4 (13-3) Holy Names Cougars in a Metro Conference tournament game at Holy Names. The Cougars, ranked 6th in the Seattle Times state-wide 3A list, were coming off a 72-53 loss to Metro-Mountain regular season champs Bishop Blanchet. Both Holy Names and West Seattle needed this win to get a higher seed in the upcoming district championships.

The game was physical from the opening tip. West Seattle struck first, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Having little luck inside the paint with West Seattle star Lydia Giomi guarding the middle, Holy Names went for the long shots early and found a lot of metal as their shots couldn't find the net. Both teams settled down a bit and Holy Names pulled within 2 at the end of the first quarter, with West Seattle up 12-10.

The Cougars came out aggressively in the second quarter and pulled ahead 13-12. The Wildcats regrouped, retook the lead and, with great court management by West Seattle point guard Charli Elliott, West Seattle went into half-time ahead by 5 24-19.

West Seattle's BelliVita will be featured on Hallmark Channel

A local West Seattle business, and a unique one at that, is finally getting its day in the sun. BelliVita, a business that produces blown glass or porcelain Pregnancy-Cast Bowls will be featured on the Hallmark Channel, on the Valentine's Day Gift Guide. The West Seattle Herald featured owner Laura Peters and BelliVita in 2011.

The segment will be aired nationwide tomorrow (Friday, February 14) on the "Home and Family" show on the Hallmark Channel at 10am hosted by Anya Sarre.

Not only that but a major, but as yet undisclosed, Hollywood star is an upcoming customer, so word about BelliVita is clearly getting around.

About BelliVita

BelliVita creates beautiful pieces of art from pregnant belly castings—whether recently cast, cast years ago, or even from a photograph.

Made of either hand-painted porcelain or blown glass, BelliVita's "belly bowls" capture the experience of pregnancy in an artistic, three-dimensional form.

Letter: Puget Boulevard S.W. not ready or right for development

Hello People of the Dell,

The large swaths of undeveloped land here in the Dell and on our adjacent slopes are again in the eyes of builders and developers as the raw land available for Single Family construction in other parts of the city wanes.

The project that Heather W has been engaged and organizing around at 6536 24th Ave SW (DPD Project # 3013981) is one of the Single Family Zoned project proposals in the Dell area, and there is now another large one that has just entered the Land Use Application process for 5028 Puget Boulevard SW. This is basically behind and a bit to the North of the large low-slung greenish hued building that houses multiple businesses, most notably West Seattle Fight and Fitness and their fantastic building facade paintwork. By Virginia Wright

The Northwest Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of conductor Anthony Spain, has been performing the classics to the greater Highline area since 1987, with awards, recognition, and appreciation from local fans and nationally throughout its well-received career. NWSO has received special recognition for its commitment to presenting the works of northwest composers. As of 2012, 125 works by northwest composers had been performed by the orchestra, providing audiences with the rare opportunity to hear music being created for symphonic orchestra by local talent. Information provided by

Boys & Girls Clubs of King County

Nearly 250 business leaders and youth advocates joined at the Washington Athletic Club (WAC) on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 for Boys & Girls Clubs of King County’s premiere youth recognition event: Youth of the Year. Imani Bender, a member of the Ballard Club, was named the winner.

“I want to congratulate Imani Bender on being named King County’s 2014 Youth of the Year. It was a difficult choice – the judges really wrestled with a tough decision because all 11 nominees are phenomenal teens. These are kids who are determined to succeed, and they have the full support of Club staff to help them along the way,” said Calvin Lyons, President/CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of King County.

In total, 11 exceptional teens from Boys & Girls of King County’s branch Clubs competed for the title. Each candidate was judged on leadership qualities exhibited through service to the Club, community, and family; their respective essays; life goals; values and moral character; academic success; and poise and public speaking.
