This great jazz experience includes concerts, dancing, food, drink and an opportunity to mingle with the musicians.

The unique festival also features FREE Swing and Latin dance instruction. Get ready to show off your new moves as you dance to the great bands following the clinic.

Festival director Lance Haslund is sad to be losing the venue.

26th annual Seattle Bike Expo attracts 8,000 cycle enthusiasts

The 26th annual Seattle Bike Expo occurred March 1st through the 2nd at the Smith Cover Cruise Terminal, Pier 91. Close to 8,000 people were in attendance to see the 175 vendors, authors, performers, and demos.

Anne-Marije Rook, Communications Director for Cascade Bicycle Club, said that this year’s event had a lot to offer including the latest gear, performances by world champion artistic cyclers, and the Washington Indie Frame-Builders Showcase.

World-class artistic cyclers Corinna Hein, Stefan Musu and Lukas Matla awed audiences with spectacular exercises on fixed framed bicycles.

Max Kullaway, Ballardite and co-founder of 333Fab, curated the Washington Indie Frame-Builders Showcase, which was a new event this year.

“It’s really a collection of local Seattle and Puget area amateur and pro builders showing their stuff. The intent is to tag onto the classic bike show that’s also happening. This way people see what has been done before and what’s happening now as far as local bike design, “said Kullaway.

Kullaway said he approached the Cascade Bike Club with the idea and they went with it.

Police Blotter Week of 3-3-14

By Tim Clifford

Bottle beaten
On Feb.19 officers were dispatched to an apartment building on the 9400 block of 16 Ave. S.W. about an assault that was reported by witnesses. When officers arrived they found broken glass and blood outside of the entrance to the building. Once inside they made contact with the victim who was bleeding from gashes to his face and was badly bruised.

According to the victim, as well as other witnesses, he was standing outside of the building when four Hispanic males (possibly accompanied by one Hispanic female) came up and asked him for a dollar. When he told the suspects that he didn’t have a dollar they began demanding that he hand over his cell phone. The victim “made a face” to this demand and before he could actually say anything three of the suspects began beating and punching him until he was on the ground. One witness told police that he saw one of the suspects rush into the melee swinging a beer bottle. Once a neighbor came outside to break things up the suspects ran off.

Dad’s Mulligan Stew

By Scott Anthony

My dad is what you’d call an optimist. He can usually find something good about nearly any situation. He talks of growing up during the depression with fondness, even though he and his family sometimes didn’t have enough to eat. One of his favorite maxims is one that his own father used to shout across the room from time to time. ‘If the wolf comes to the door, invite him in, we’ll have him for supper!’

For me, this is an important thing to remember, because I cannot think of any days when I have truly gone hungry.

Jerry's View: Never underestimate the power of prayer

by Jerry Robinson

My mom was a treasure and very tolerant of my dad's fight with the bottle during the depression. He'd come home many nights in his usual stupor, we kids would help undress him and put him to bed while mother lectured him. I am certain he did not hear a word of it as he would arise early the next morning for breakfast, never remembering much of the events the night before.

He looked around for his bottle, never finding it. We poured it into the open flame of the fire for the thrill of the swoosh and tossed the glass into the garbage.
