SLIDESHOW: Raiders get the best of Sealth 7-2

By Greg McCorkle

The Seahawks came back to the SWAC with the hopes of getting a two game sweep of the Raiders from Nathan Hale. Sealth got that ball rolling two days earlier with a resounding 7-2 victory on the Raiders turf, and with the return to their home diamond the Seahawks were confident in their ability to put another “W” in the score sheet.

Stealth’s ace right hander Blaine Steel was on the mound for the game. Steele controlled the game in the first two innings allowing no hits or runs as he kept the Raiders batters off balance. But the Hawks lumber could fair no better. Their only hit came from a double by Sealth right fielder Lee Lee in the second and he was stranded and got no further.

As the bottom of the Hale rotation came around they began to find some wiggle room in Steele’s delivery and started making contact. By the time Sealth got out of the third they found themselves down 3-0. The Seahawks bats started to come to life but just couldn’t pull the trigger and again left points on the bags.

Breeders Theater--Tolstory now playing

by Tim Takechi

We’ve all heard the expression “If these walls could talk.” But what about “If these nesting dolls could talk?”

And sing? And dance? And act out fairy tales?

In Breeders Theater’s newest production, “Tolstory” tells us a story through the eyes of four matryoshka dolls that belong to a typical 19th century Russian woman named Katrina Karenin. The audience sees very little of Ms. Karenin, but we get to see plenty of the four dolls she owns throughout her entire life.

Matryoshka dolls, better known in English as nesting dolls, are the rounded wooden dolls that decrease in size when they are placed inside one another. They are a great metaphor for the passing of time, as the smallest doll can represent infanthood while the largest represents late adulthood.

We see Katrina Karenin from infancy to childhood, young adulthood, adulthood and lastly, old age. While her life may not be as epic as that of most of Leo Tolstroy’s famous heroines, if our most valued possessions could talk, they would tell us that everybody’s life has their memorable moments. You don’t need to be a princess to act like a princess.

Swedish glass artist Ingalena Klenell to speak about her work At Nordic Heritage Museum

Swedish glass artist Ingalena Klenell will speak on her work, in conjunction with the exhibition “Pull, Twist, Blow” currently on view at the Nordic Heritage Museum.

Lecture: Future is a Long Story — About Glass, Place, and Longing
Wednesday, April 9, 7:00 p.m.

Listen as Ingalena Klenell, a featured artist in the exhibition Pull, Twist, Blow on view through April 27, presents a lecture on her glass art.

In her work, Swedish artist Ingalena Klenell explores the ideas of fragility and vulnerability, both in the material of glass and in life itself. Klenell sees glass as a way of investigating the limits of techniques and of her own skill and creativity, and of creating ways to transcend those limits. In 2010, Klenell collaborated with artist Beth Lipman to create the installation Glimmering Gone at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma. The installation used landscape and artifacts to investigate our connection with nature and memory.

Admiral District taggers and vandalism caught on camera

In January the West Seattle Herald showed the Admiral Theater and vicinity had become the target of taggers and vandals. One even went so far as to climb on the roof of the theater to make a massive graffiti image on the upper wall. Now, theater Manager Dinah Brein has secured photographic evidence of who is doing the damage.

NOTE: We had previously published the photos but since the suspects have not been officially charged by the police we removed the photos.

She shared this letter with the Herald:

"Yesterday, shortly after noon, I received a phone call from Rae, a resident in the condo's behind the alley. She informed me that someone had over night, tagged the businessnes in the alley including the Chevron, the Admiral, the Pizza Restaurant as well as the Copper Coin and the Mission.

I went outside and looked up and sure enough, they had also tagged the roof of the Admiral again (Chevron side).
