You Are What You Eat: Lift your performance with healthy breakfast bars

By Katy Wilkens, MS, RD

As a dietitian, I always tell people they should eat breakfast. It is indeed the most important meal of the day. Studies back up my advice: kids who eat breakfast do better in school, and adults who eat breakfast perform better all day.

Now there’s a whole new group to worry about: people who skip breakfast and lunch! A recent study found that fewer than 25 percent of people take regular lunch breaks. A whopping 30 percent rarely take lunch breaks.
Sound like a good way to lose weight? Wrong. When you go that long without food, your body kicks into “starvation mode.” When you eat your next meal, typically dinner, you store up a higher proportion of those calories as fat.

Award recognizes several Port of Seattle initiatives that reduce air pollutants

Information provided by the Port of Seattle.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) presented the Port of Seattle with a 2014 Clean Air Excellence Award today in recognition of its Seaport Air Quality Program. Eight other initiatives and one individual were also given awards, which recognize innovative programs that protect Americans' health and the environment, educate the public, serve their communities and stimulate the economy.

“The Port of Seattle thanks the EPA for their recognition of our environmental initiatives,” said Tay Yoshitani, Port of Seattle CEO. “Our staff has worked closely with local organizations and businesses to insure that our programs have a positive impact on both air quality and economic growth for our region.”

The Port of Seattle was given the award in the ‘Regulation/Policy Innovations’ category for its work in successfully reducing maritime-related emissions through programs that exceed laws and regulations. The port worked collaboratively with regulatory agencies, neighboring ports, the maritime industry, and the community to reduce air emissions.

Keep King County Moving

By King County Council Chair Larry Phillips

This Earth Day voters will finally have the opportunity to save Metro Transit service. For years, threats of impending Metro Transit cuts have worried commuters and transit riders who rely on buses to get to work, school, and other activities. The sales tax revenues that fund Metro Transit dropped dramatically during the Great Recession and still haven’t returned to the pre-recession levels needed to support current transit service levels. Until now we have kept the system running through efficiencies, fare increases, reserves, and temporary funding, but the reserves and temporary funding will run out this year. Without action by this spring, transit cuts of up to 17 percent will start taking effect this fall. On February 24th, I sponsored a resolution—passed unanimously by the King County Transportation Benefit District—that gives voters the option to stop transit cuts and fund Metro.

Seattle Public Health, environment groups and medical professionals come together to address growing crisis of antibiotic resistance

Information provided by Food and Water Watch

Today, hundreds of public health and environmental advocates and medical professionals in the greater Seattle area are speaking out to make the case for stronger regulation of non-therapeutic antibiotics in Washington’s food supply.

Close to 30 million pounds of antibiotics are sold each year in the United States solely for use in animal agriculture, and many of these drugs are administered to animals for reasons other than treating disease, such as growth promotion and to compensate for overcrowded and unsanitary living conditions. The overuse of antibiotics in meat production has been proven to contribute to increasing rates of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (or “superbugs”). Antibiotic resistant bacteria pose a serious threat to human health: according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 2 million Americans suffer from antibiotic-resistant infections every year, accounting for at least 23,000 deaths.

Senior Services Seeks Nominations for the 2014 Inspire Positive Aging Award

Senior Services is now accepting nominations for the 2014 Inspire Positive Aging Award. The deadline is May 2, 2014. Nomination forms are available at www.inspire-award.org. Requests for the form or questions regarding the award may be directed to Wendy Armour, Senior Development Director, (206) 727-6205 or wendya@seniorservices.org.

King County is filled with older adults, whose lives inspire us about how to age with grace, enthusiasm, creativity, hope, and energy. They quietly make life better for others even as their years advance. Senior Services created the Inspire Positive Aging Award in 2006 to recognize such inspiring elders.

“Is there a senior in your life who has inspired you?” asks Senior Services CEO Paula Houston. “You may have a parent, mentor, older neighbor or high school teacher, whose life exemplifies positive aging through community involvement, healthy living, relationships, and endurance—all the traits we ourselves hope to exhibit as we age. Join us in celebrating positive aging and nominate someone you know for the Inspire Positive Aging Award.”
