Highline wrestlers steamroll over Kennedy in opener

The high school wrestling season is off and running.

By Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

Kennedy Catholic and Highline went at it on the mat in both schools' first Seamount League match of the season Thursday with the Pirates making a statement by flattening the Lancers, 61-18.

"Our boys are ready to go," said Casey Rice, the Pirates' fifth year head coach. "It's a good mix of youth and veterans. It's a good start, but a long ways to go."

The Pirates plowed through the matches, starting with 106-pound freshman Kevin Almazan beating his foe, Richie Wallace, by pin, 23 seconds into the match. At 113 pounds, freshman Kyle Herbruger received a win by forfeit. So right out of the gate, it was the home team on top, 12-0, and the score would get much more losided than that.

Next up, at 120 pounds, was little chance for the Lancers to get a first win of the match as the Pirates' Zach Edson, an eighth-place finisher at state in the Tacoma Dome last season, was on the floor. Before his Pirates teammates could get in more cheering than a "Let's go, Zach,'" it was over -- a 10-second pin in the first round.

Jefferson holds on to top Mt. Rainier

AUBURN - Thomas Jefferson scored three consecutive points and forced missed shots in the late stages of the fourth quarter to beat visiting Mt. Rainier 46-41 in girls basketball action Fri., Dec. 12.
"It was the difference in the level of intensity that we played," said Ram head coach Salvo Coppa. "For the first quarter and a half we had good intensity. Then, me made elementary mistakes and lost our high intensity until the fourth quarter."

The Raiders, who had a 14-point advantage in the first 25 seconds of the fourth quarter, fell victim to increased Ram energy that brought Mt. Rainier within 43-39 after Madison Lommen's half court steal and bucket followed by Cecilia Tafia's assist to Mulki Nur with 1:31 remaining in regulation action. Katie Hernandez sank a free throw before MR missed a close in shot and Michaela Swiney dropped home two free throws with 34.2 seconds left for the breathing room that made two free Ram free throws from Nur 20 seconds later non critical to the Raiders.

Kid Governor highlights the need for early education funding

in a made for media event in West Seattle on Monday five-year-old Sabella Johnson met with the press as the make-believe "kid-governor" to share with Governor Inslee and state legislators what she would do if she were in charge and to highlight the need for early education funding.

She and the real Governor were both releasing their education budget today.

The Early Learning Action Alliance, and Sabella, released a toddler-friendly ‘board book’ version of the Washington State Budget for Early Learning, outlining the priorities that should be in the State budget.

Also present were Jennifer Jennings-Shaffer, Early Learning Policy Director of Children's Alliance who discussed the Early Learning Action Alliance priorities and how high-quality early learning is an investment in our littlest learners and our economic future.

Joel Ryan, Executive Director of the Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP) spoke about the priorities his organization would like to see addressed in the state budget.

Ballardite owner to reopen Paseo

Paseo freaks can finally stop fearing a sandwich apocalypse after a new owner announced last week that he will soon reopen the restaurant.

On Dec. 12, a federal judge approved the pending bankruptcy sale, declaring Ballardite, Ryan Santwire, the new owner of Paseo.

Santwire said that the sandwich shop in Fremont will be open as soon as possible, and that he intends to stay true to the old ways of the sandwich glory customers know and love.

Paseo closed abruptly last month after former owner, Lorenzo Lorenzo, filed for bankruptcy in the wake of employees filing a lawsuit against him in September. The employees claimed they were denied bathroom, meal breaks and overtime wages. Lorenzo disputes these claims.

Santwire bought Paseo for $91,000 last week at an auction held in judge’s chambers at the federal courthouse. With the purchase come the name, assets and location, but the recipes for the salsa marinades, mayos and beans will stay with Lorenzo.
