Evergreen vs Tyee womens basketball

By Ed Shepherd
Sports Correspondent

The Evergreen and Tyee girls basketball teams played with a good beat throughout the game despite the final score favoring the Wolverines, 50-7, over the visiting Totems on Friday.
It was both teams' opening Seamount League games this season, so the Wolverines moved to 1-0 while the Totems dropped to 0-1.

"Good opening, good assessment," said Wolverines coach Natasha Hicks-McCray. "And Tyee played with a lot of heart. They played hard throughout the game, impressive, until the end."

Definitely not going down as the most competitive game in high school sports history, but both teams, not just the Wolverines, went at each other, fighting for the ball, scrambling for rebounds, the whole game. And that's despite the score being, 19-3, Wolverines after the first quarter, with the Totems' lone points of the first eight minutes of play coming on senior point guard and captain MaryRose Cadelina knocking in a three-point shot off the glass in the waning seconds of the first quarter.

DPD grants permission for LIHI hygiene center at Cheryl Chow Court

The Low Income Housing Institute's, (LIHI) Cheryl Chow Court (2014 N.W. 57th St.), is completed and has started to lease apartments.

Meanwhile, the Department of Planning and Development announced last week that permission has been granted for establishing a Urban Rest Stop on the lower level of the facility.

The 1,948 square foot URS is planned to serve as a hygiene center for homeless and low-income individuals. The plans show four private hygiene stations, public restrooms and a laundry facility. The Ballard location would be the third URS managed by LIHI in Seattle. The other two are Downtown and in the University District.

LIHI applied for the approval last February. As reported by the Ballard News-Tribune last March (www.tinyurl.com/mxbreae), the Seattle municipal code stipulates institutional use facilities need to be at least 600 feet apart. The now approved URS is less than 600 feet from the Ballard Public Library and St. Luke’s Church.

An ACU waives developmental standards for developers. The project has mustered resistance from some neighbors from the very beginning.

Lucky Star is Boutique Style Consignment

By: Tim Robinson

"Designer handbags are my biggest sellers", Christine Peterson said recently at her Lucky Star consignment shop in Normandy Park.

No surprise for Christine who has been working in women's retail for many years. Christine would be the first to tell you that Lucky Star is not retail. What it is, is carefully selected “pre owned’'”clothing, handbags and jewelry on consignment from your neighbors and friends. Throw in a little local art and gifts and you have a pleasant, conveniently located shop in Manhattan Villge shopping center with free parking.

Yes, it is a women's shop but you'll find men's and children's fine apparel here too. All neatly presented on rows of white hangers. "Retail 101 basics", Christine advised.

Consignment shops, by their nature, suggest hand-me-down and out-of-style items. Lucky Star is not your average consignment shop. All items are carefully inspected, clean and in excellent condition. Lucky Star is Boutique Style Consignment!

Replacement Levy Slated for February 10 Ballot

Levy will fund critical educational programs and operations across the district

Burien, WA– A three-year educational programs and operations replacement levy will go before voters on February 10, 2015. Levies pay for educating students and operating schools above the costs covered by the state. The levy is not a new tax. It replaces the previous levy passed in 2011, which is due to expire at the end of 2015.

The proposed levy would be an estimated $180.9 million. That is 21 percent of the district's operations budget. The levy would pay for all or portions of basic, day-to-day operations of schools, such as:

  • Student programs
  • Teacher pay, for additional teachers above the state minimum
  • Instructional assistants in classrooms
  • Textbooks, curriculum, and teacher training
  • Additional course offerings for students
  • Athletics
  • Arts and music
  • Special education
  • Bus transportation (not fully funded by the state)
  • Building and grounds maintenance (not fully funded by the state)
  • Computers and technology
  • Gifted education programs

Highline Seeks Input about Recent Bond Measure

Results will help guide plans to meeting urgent need for new schools

Burien, WA– Highline Public Schools is asking all families, staff, and community members to participate in an online survey and a live Telephone Town Hall meeting about the recent bond proposal, which garnered 59.3 percent of the vote but failed to reach the supermajority needed to pass.

Highline is gathering community input as district leaders determine when to run another bond measure and what, if any, changes should be made to the bond package. Highline faces critical challenges after last month’s bond measure fell just short of the 60 percent approval required for passage. The need to replace aging schools and to address overcrowding and growing enrollment is still urgent.

“In our state, school construction and repairs are funded by local bonds, so the only way to solve these two challenges is to pass a bond measure,” said Superintendent Susan Enfield. “We need to hear from the community and come to a solution that is in the best interest of all of our students.”
