10 massage parlors hit in large-scale prostitution sting

5 of the parlors shut down were located in Burien in this multi-city operation

By Tim Clifford

Today the King County Sheriff’s Office working in conjunction with police departments in Burien, Seattle, Kent, and Snohomish County served warrants and shut-down 10 massage parlors accused of promoting prostitution. 5 of the businesses hit in this multi-department sting are located in Burien.
The operation was begun three months ago after a series of complaints from citizens and businesses throughout the city of Burien concerning the activities of numerous massage parlors and salons. Detectives began investigating the owners of the parlors and followed-up on connections these owners held with other parlors throughout the state.
Warrants were served to these establishments which were also then shut down pending further investigation.
During today’s sting nine arrests were made with three of those arrested being booked on charges of promoting prostitution. A press release from the KCSO predicted that more arrests would be forthcoming citing that charges of Promoting Prostitution will usually be accompanied with financial crimes.

Prostate cancer and energy poverty

By Isaac Orr

Smoking, obesity, exposure to toxic chemicals: Which of these factors do you think plays the biggest role in determining how deadly prostate cancer will be in a given situation? The correct answer is none of them. The most life-threatening factor in prostate cancer is poverty, coupled with a lack of access to electricity. This condition, called “energy poverty” by the World Bank, is the reason all illnesses – including prostate cancer – are far more devastating to people in poor nations than in the developed world.

Worldwide, 1.3 billion people have no access to electricity, meaning nearly one in every five people on the planet lives in energy poverty. As a result, hospitals in energy-impoverished areas, and the medical care received within them, are primitive, and treatment often consists of medical procedures long considered antiquated in the United States. Without electricity, there is no refrigeration for medicines and donated blood. Without electricity, equipment used for early detection of diseases does not run. All of this has serious consequences for the lives of the energy-poor.

Abes outrebound Kennedy

By Gerardo Bolong
Contributing Writer

TACOMA - Narrows 3A League Lincoln collected the caroms to collar a 61-42 home girls basketball verdict against Seamount League 3A Kennedy Catholic in Wed., Dec. 3 non-league court action.

"Our rebounding was bad," said Kennedy coach Greg Caldwell. "We have more work to to do. We were executing our offense well until their press bothered us and led to fast breaks. The girls didn't back down against a good team. We're working some new players into the system and we'll be good this year. Right now, they need to play with more aggression and play with more instinct. Our girls are trying very hard and striving to remember many things."

Kennedy's undoing began after both teams ran the court briskly.

Co-captain Kelsey Abrejera gave the Lancers their final lead of the game at 18-17 with an outside basket before the Abes broke a 19-all stand off with nine consecutive points in second quarter play. In addition to losing the rebound battles, KC had major problems in bounding the ball and keeping possession. Good passing was something hard to execute, as well.

Kohl-Welles seeks local students for legislative page program

Each year hundreds of students ages 14-16 have the opportunity to participate in the Washington State Senate page program.

The page program is a hands-on educational experience that takes place on the Capitol Campus during the legislative session. For one week, students will be employees of the Senate, performing administrative tasks and participating in civic education activities that demonstrate the operation of state government.

“This is a truly unique learning experience that challenges young minds and teaches the importance of civic participation,” said Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles (D-Seattle). “I am seeking students from around my district who are eager to try new things, actively learn, meet new people, and find out ways in which they can make a difference through active participation in the political process.”

Changes coming to popular Baby Story Time at Ballard Library

Every Monday afternoon, empty baby strollers crowd the entryway of the Ballard branch of the Seattle Public Library, as families gather together for back-to-back sessions of Baby Story Time hosted by Amy LaVare. LaVare, or “Miss Amy,” as she is better known to Ballard parents, has offered the Baby Story Time program to the public for the past two years. Due to give birth early next year, LaVare plans on taking a three-month maternity leave in January to care for her first child.

Joan Moran, a library volunteer who has assisted LaVare for the past year and a half, praises LaVare’s enthusiasm, energy, and ability to create an environment that engages participations from both the babies and their parents. “The sessions aren’t very long, but always filled with a variety of activities,” says Moran. “ Not everyone relates to this young age group. It takes a special person.”

Ballard parent Odette Allen-Berg, who attends LaVare’s program regularly with her young son Rowan, says “Amy is a lovely person. She puts a lot into Story Time, learning children’s names and talking to parents.”

Chief Sealth buries Bulldogs

By Jeremy Martin

The opening game of the 2014-15 girls basketball season started like a track meet and didn't slow down until the final buzzer sounded with Chief Sealth coming away with a 75-50 victory over the visiting Foster Bulldogs.

The Seahawks (1-0) raced out to a quick 25-8 lead powered by a barrage of long distance shooting and aggressive defense before taking a 49-22 advantage into the half.

Senior Oshae Walker hit five three pointers for Sealth while junior Allison Hadaway connected on a pair of three pointers as well.

Walker would end the night as the game's leading scorer, putting up 26 points to go with seven rebounds, six assists and four steals.

“Last year we had some ups and downs with her. I think she's finally wrapping her head around that this is what she wants to do. She wants to succeed. Basketball is her passion,” Seahawks head coach Katie Jo Maris said.

Hadaway finished with 10 points and six rebounds while displaying a new found vocal leadership.
