Alki Huddle opens in former Bamboo location; Grand opening likely in March

The former Bamboo restaurant at 2806 Alki Ave SW closed in November. It had faced it's share of issues with law enforcement over time and that meant it was time for a change. Owner Plamen Stoyanob, still owns the restaurant lounge and chose to remake it as a sports bar called the Alki Huddle.

"When he took over Bamboo he never intended for it to stay as Bamboo," Jessica Martin, General Manager explained. "We're not a bar. We're a bar/restaurant," she said explaining that it's open to all ages.

The Alki Huddle, still under construction (including the apartments above) by STS Construction, is now open but won't have it's official grand opening until sometime in March Martin explained.

Pat's View: “Requiem for The Kalakala”

by Pat Cashman

When I first came to this area many years ago, I heard the name “Kalakala”---and since I was in the broadcast business, my first thought was that it was the longest set of call letters I’d ever heard.

The name was so long---and redundant---that when people said it, it was hard to know where to stop.
But as old-timers (or new-timers who are paying attention) know, the Kalakala was the name of our ferry system’s most iconic vessel---if you give exception, of course, to Ride the Duck.

The Kalakala was the star attraction of what used to be called “The Black Ball Ferry Line.”Bing Crosby and the Andrew Sisters---who were the Justin Bieber and Spice Girls of their day---even sang about the legendary enterprise.

Listen to this catchy tune. It’s a chestnut, but you’ll hear mention of several ferries---including the one this column is about. “The Black Ball Ferry Line (1951)”

Police blotter week of 1-12-15

By Tim Clifford

Single shot fired at passing car
A few minutes before 4 a.m. on Jan.1 a single gunshot was fired at a passing car near the Westwood Village Shopping Center on the 2800 block of S.W. Barton St. The victim drove up to a police cruiser approximately 30 minutes after the incident to report that he had been shot at.

The victim explained that he had been driving to pick up a friend when he noticed another friend of his walking along 25 Ave. S.W. / S.W. Trenton St. with a gas can. After offering this friend a lift the victim began driving through the mall to meet up with another acquaintance at a nearby restaurant. Spotting this friend sitting near a window of a restaurant in the mall the victim attempted to drive back around to pick her up.

THANK YOU

The annual coat and cold weather clothing collection for the West Seattle helpline was a great success!

Special thanks to local businesses such as Berkshire Hathaway, Mirsepasy Law office and the Chelan café, to name a few. With their help, and the help of other local supporters, we collected seven large barrels of cold weather clothing for our less fortunate friends and neighbors. A heartfelt thanks to fellow citizens who made it possible by their generosity and giving nature.

Let’s all hope for a pleasant 2015.

Happy New Year,

Dave Newman, Agent
