Cab driver wounded in crossfire of drive-by shooting

In an unfortunate case of “wrong place, wrong time” a cab driver was seriously wounded in Des Moines Monday night after being caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting.

The 50-year-old driver, whose name has not been disclosed at this time, had just dropped off a fare at a home in the 21800 block of 30 Ave. S., a residential area that is close to the SeaTac city line. As the cabbie was driving away he noticed a green Ford Expedition, with its passengers hanging out of the windows and armed with guns, coming in the opposite lane. At the same time the driver also noticed three men standing across the street in front of a small apartment complex.

As the Ford was passing the cab its passengers opened fire in the direction of the three men on the street with an estimated fifteen rounds being fired. One bullet blew out the driver’s side window and hits the cab driver in the upper body, exiting through his lower right abdomen. The cabbie sped away and sought help at the 7-11 on 216 St.

Seattle Sister City Association renews its relationship with Bergen through the music of Edvard Grieg

In 1956 President Dwight Eisenhower created the people-to-people exchange program between Americans and citizens of other countries. President Eisenhower's intention was to foster personal citizen diplomacy in the hope of lessening future world conflicts. Seattle is proud to have been one of the innovators in promoting and developing sister city relationships, and in 1967, a sister-city relationship was forged between Seattle and Bergen.

Throughout the years, the Seattle-Bergen program has featured many outstanding cultural and educational exchanges. In 1970 Sister Cities International honored the association with an award for best overall program. Bergen's Nordness Park has a totem pole from Seattle, and the Seattle community of Ballard has a park at Bergen Place in Ballard dedicated by King Olav of Norway. Only last month the fully restored mural at Bergen Place was rededicated by King Harald V of Norway on his visit to the Pacific Northwest.

At Large In Ballard: Journey

By Peggy Sturdivant

It was timely in many ways to meet Susan Towle for coffee early in the day that would deposit me at Boston’s Logan airport by the following morning. She just completed four years of work on a book that will make its formal debut at Secret Garden Books on Friday, June 12th 6 p.m. Its subtitle is “A Guidebook for the Journey Through Old.

Writing “Old Is Not a Four Letter Word” has been her working journey the last five years. After 40 years in nursing, the last 20 of which were in eldercare, Towle retired with at least a book’s worth of information to share. She has witnessed the typical American’s approach to aging, of ourselves or of our parents, and she knows we are unprepared.

An Interview with Christopher Robinson and Gavin Kovite about what comes next after War of the Encyclopeadists

By Amanda Knox

I think there were four kinds of scotch. The reason I’m not completely certain about that number is because I am certain we each had a glass of each. Discussing characters, conclusions, and the measure of literary success degenerated into comparisons of Star Trek: The Next Generation to Moby Dick, a trip to QFC for roast chicken, a roof-top hang-out overlooking the Space Needle, and finally, a quiet meandering back to our respective Capitol Hill apartments in the wee hours of the next morning. This was the context of my interview with Christopher Robinson and Gavin Kovite about War of the Encyclopeadists, published May 19th. What follows is what fans can look forward to next:

Kovite: We’re going to write a book about Amazon in Detroit.
