Two service stations robbed and two clerks pepper sprayed in robber’s crime spree

Suspect is still at large at this time

This morning two clerks at two different service stations were pepper sprayed and robbed by the same suspect within minutes of each other on Pacific Highway. A manhunt is underway by the Des Moines Police Department at the moment.

The incidents began this morning (the time is still unverified, but before 9 a.m.) at the 7-11 located at 260th and Pacific Highway S. when a white or Hispanic male in his 50s with greying hair, a dark blue Seahawks hat, and wearing a grey sweatshirt with jeans entered the convenience store. The man walked up to the clerk and pepper sprayed him at close range and reached over the counter to steal money from his cash register.

Within the hour this same suspect entered the Shell station convenience store at S. 272nd, a little under a mile away from the 7-11, and asked the female clerk for prices on cigarettes. As she was looking this information up on her computer the suspect placed some money on the counter. When the clerk opened up the cash till the suspect brought out the pepper spray and doused the clerk in the face, same as the previous victim. He again reached over the counter, grabbed the money and ran.

What do Bing, Jimi, and Kurt have in common? The music of artistic giants and Washington sons Bing Crosby, Jimi Hendrix, and Kurt Cobain spans generations. Their music belongs to us all. Washington state holds the unique position of being 'on the edge of the world' from both musical and geographic standpoints. This placement provided a rich breeding ground for three distinct and revolutionary artists who pushed artistic and technological limits to forge new musical and cultural territory. In this captivating presentation, musical journalist Amanda Wilde highlights unusual and universal themes and threads that weave three distinct artists with three groundbreaking musical eras: the 1930s, the 1960s and the 1990s. Along the way she will show how they have influenced the technology, business, and notoriety of Washington state.

LETTER: Please Support Best Starts for Kids

To the editor:

Crisis Clinic was one of the earliest organizations to formally endorse Best Starts for Kids, Proposition 1. The six-year levy invests in prevention and early intervention strategies that will strengthen families and ensure our children reach adulthood healthy and ready to contribute to the prosperity of the region.
“Every day we respond to families and youth in crisis and needing help,” said Kathleen Southwick, Crisis Clinic’s Executive Director. “This levy provides critical resources to help children and their families build a solid foundation for the future.”

Science tells us prevention and early intervention are the most effective and least expensive ways to address our most serious problems. Lack of early support for children results in costly interventions later in life. Indeed, much of the County’s current funding responds to negative outcomes like mental illness, substance abuse, homelessness, and especially incarceration – the most costly and least effective intervention.

Falling branch kills Burien 10-year-old girl at birthday party

A fallen tree branch killed a 10-year-old girl from Burien who was visiting Federal Way for a birthday party. The accident took place on Saturday, August 29th, just after noon when Samara J. Lereneo of Burien, attended a birthday party at the Trellis Apartment complex near the intersection of S.W. 352nd Street and 25th Avenue S.W. in Federal Way. According to police, intense wind caused several tree branches to break and scatter across parking lots and roadways. One of Samara’s friends who was also attending the party noticed that she had tripped over a tree branch and went to help her up. Upon approaching the girl found Samara on her back, under the branch with a significant head wound which had already caused significant blood loss. Despite emergency responders best efforts, they were unable to revive Samara. Samara was one of two people who were killed during the windstorm in King County.
