Burien Arts Gallery accepting donated jewelry for Hospitality House and other women’s agencies

Now those beads, brooches, bangles and baubles lying around and never being worn in a jewelry drawer can brighten the lives of women who are homeless, victims of domestic violence or recovering from addiction.

The Burien Arts Gallery, 826 S.W. 152nd Street in Olde Burien, has begun accepting the donated jewelry.
The jewelry is sorted, cleaned and repaired before being passed on.

Hospitality House at Lake Burien Presbyterian Church is one the agencies that will receive the jewelry.
Hospitality House provides temporary shelter, meals and services for women. Residents receive health care, employment help, mental health and substance abuse treatment, or other assistance
Program director Sheenah Randolph says the shelter will give out the jewelry for special occasions, job interviews and as a reward for accomplishments such as sobriety milestones, obtaining a job, finding permanent housing or graduations.

“Any woman feels more special and confident when they have something beautiful to wear,” Randolph declared. “It will be confidence-building knowing someone cares about them in the community.”

Stolen Dog Recovered Safely with Help of Social Media and Burien C.A.R.E.S.

By Michele Smith

On a sunny day in mid-September, Philip and Analena Jaroslow’s dog Stella went missing from their yard in Renton. Stella is a Rhodesian-Pit bull mix who the Jaroslow’s rescued several years ago, the dog and their 3 year old daughter Layla are incredibly bonded and inseparable, it was very unlike Stella to leave the yard and not come back when called.

Frantic, the Jaroslow’s did what most people do when their beloved pet goes missing, they posted signs in the neighborhood, contacted the local shelters and turned to the Internet, posting on their personal Facebook pages and Craigslist. “We started driving through our neighborhood as well as other neighborhoods to find her and there was no sign of her.  We spent the next week posting signs everywhere, checking in with all local humane societies, posting on Facebook and even Craigslist.” Philip Jaroslow told us.

2 weeks had passed, the Jaroslow’s daughter Layla was despondent, and her parents feared the worst.

Kela earns playoff win, hold

Keone Kela helped the Texas Rangers get off to a 2-0 start in their American League Divisional Series against the Toronto Blue Jays.

After earning a hold in their opener the Chief Sealth graduate picked up the win in the Rangers' second game -- a 6-4 victory in 14 innings on Friday.
Kela threw the 13th inning for Texas and held the host Blue Jays scoreless, then his teammates rallied for two runs in the top of the 14th and held on.
Kela got the final out of his inning on a fly ball to the wall by Edwin Encarnacion that left an impression on the 22-year-old rookie who also pitched for Everett Community College before going to the Rangers organization.

"I was just praying to God real quick that (Texas center fielder Delino DeShields) had enough room and thankfully, by the hair on his chinny chin chin, he made (the catch)," he told the Associated Press and Fort Worth Star-Telegram in a report published by The Seattle Times.
Kela also struck out one and walked one in throwing one complete inning.
