Pirates hang on to beat Evergreen

By Tim Clinton

Highline's Pirates prevailed despite having only six players present Friday.

The Highline girls basketball team had to hang on for a 38-36 victory over Evergreen in its short-handed state.

"We have four girls injured right now and one sick," said Pirates head coach Darrin Stolz after the action in the Wolverines' gymnasium. "So five able bodies were down. So that's why we were doing what we were doing."

What the Pirates had to do was avoid too much foul trouble, although they still lost 5-foot, 9-inch freshman starting post Stella Fosberg to her fifth foul.

"Everyone knew she had four fouls except Stella," said Stolz. "She had four fouls and then she got her fifth."

Senior guard Jenny Hovland, on the other hand, did finish the game despite having four fouls in the first half.

Because of the player shortage Stolz had to bring up two junior varsity players for the game.

One of them was Joyce Muliaganotoa, who would up pacing the Pirates with 13 points.

"She's a dynamo out there," said Stolz. "She may never go back now. She played really well."

MUDSLIDE IN BURIEN, UPDATE AS OF DECEMBER 17

BURIEN, WASH. – Last week, the City of Burien received the geotechnical report on the state of the Dec. 8 mudslide. In accordance with the report, the City is keeping the evacuation order in effect for the two houses which sustained damage in the slide and allowing the other three evacuated houses to resume occupancy only upon performing further geotechnical studies of their property to make sure it is safe.

According to the report, the land around the slide is likely to remain unstable throughout the coming months due to precipitation. Individuals who have been monitoring the area indicate that erosion continues along the slide area but movement appears to have slowed and the debris piles do not seem to have moved noticeably over the past several days of drier weather.

The geotechnical team assembled to assess the site reviewed the overall geology of the area, recent weather patterns, the size and shape of the slide, the pitch of the slope, the permeability of soil, the movement of water through the soil, and many other factors to arrive at their recommendations.

Board to increase the number of retail stores by 222 to ensure access by medical patients

OLYMPIA - Following an analysis of the entire marijuana marketplace in Washington State, the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (WSLCB) today heard a recommendation from staff to increase the number of retail marijuana stores from the current cap of 334 to a new cap of 556. The methodology for the cap will be part of emergency rules which will be announced Jan. 6, 2016. The allocation of retail licenses determined by the board will be published on the WSLCB website at lcb.wa.gov.

"Our goal was clear; to ensure medical patients have access to the products they need," said WSLCB Director Rick Garza. "There will be more storefronts for patients going forward than are available today. In addition, qualified patients can grow their own or join a four-member cooperative."
