Seattle to open safe lots for homeless, one in Ballard

Information provided by the City Seattle of Seattle

In response to the continued crisis of homelessness on the streets of Seattle, Mayor Ed Murray issued an emergency order to expedite the siting of two safe lots in Ballard and Delridge for homeless individuals and families living in recreational vehicles and cars.

“These are not long term solutions to end homelessness, but temporary locations that can be managed to provide a safer environment for those living on our streets and have less impact on our neighborhoods,” said Murray. “The City’s active case management services will reach out to those experiencing homelessness and living in their vehicles, with the goal to help move them to permanent housing as quickly as possible. These safe lots will also help reduce the public health issues currently impacting several of our neighborhoods.”

Charles Wright cruises by Warriors

Article courtesy of Gerardo Bolong

Visiting Charles Wright Academy took advantage of a slow start by Seattle Christian and never trailed in a 50-37 Nisqually 1A girls basketball win in SeaTac on Warriors Homecoming night, Fri., Jan. 15.

Seattle Christian fell to 2-1 league and 7-3 overall while CWA improved to 2-1 and 9-3 respectively.

Leading only 26-22 after an SC driving lay up by Alex Ellis early in the second half CWA reclaimed tactical advantage of the glass to pull away for 35-28 lead going into the fourth quarter and just kept the heat on to fire away into double digits en route to the game-high final margin.

At key moments, the Tarriers capitalized on Warrior lapses to just get to the ball faster on both ends of the court.

"We've been running a new set of offenses and it was frustrating," said Seattle Christian head coach Dave Jansen about his team's inability to focus well on either end of the court. "They had two scorers we didn't defend well against while we weren't able to run the court often. We were standing and they (the Tarriers) went to the ball."

'This Is My Childhood: Finland At War to premier' Jan. 28 at Nordic Heritage Museum

World War II was the battle between Nazi Germany and the Allied Powers, but between 1939 and 1945, Finland fought three wars: the Winter War and the Continuation War against the Soviet Union. And finally, the Lapland War that raged against the remnants of the German forces that were allowed into Finland as co-belligerents against the Russians. In this new documentary, viewers will experience these little-known wars in Finland through the eyes of the children who lived through them.

Bombings during the Winter War and the Continuation War prompted Finnish parents to send their children to the countryside or to safety abroad. Of the 70,000 Finnish children evacuated, most went to Sweden and personal accounts of the evacuation and life abroad are featured in the film. Liisa Jussila recounts her arrival in Sweden:

It was a big third quarter by Seattle Christian that fired the Warriors to a 59-42 Nisqaully League 1A home victory against Charles Wright Academy on Fri., Jan. 15 ,as part of 2016 Homecoming.

The Warriors improved to 2-1 league and 8-5 overall. CWA fell to 0-3 and 5-8 respectively.

Defensive overplays in the third quarter by Taggart Anderson the Warriors forced a torrid pace that the Tarriers were unable to match en route to win.

Clinging to a 24-22 halftime margin, Seattle Christian exploded to seal the deal.

Evan Toy's assist to Anderson began the Warrior surge to victory in the opening moments of the second half. Anderson followed with two consecutive three-point howitzers and Toy capitalized on a steal for a lay up for a 34-22 clearance midway through the quarter. Charles Wright was unable to draw closer than eight points the rest of the way while SC continued to plunder its way while fashioning a 22-point lead of 53-31 in a run to daylight performance with five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter

You Are What You Eat: Ragin’ Cajun dishes warm up a winter meal

By Katy Wilkens

In these dark winter days, we need something to help us think of sunnier climates! Head south by cooking up some warm and filling Cajun food. Cajun is a style of cooking from the American South, and comes from the name for the French Acadians who were displaced from Canada to the Louisiana territory. Cajun food is a wonderful mix of cultures and woven into the dishes is a rough and rustic cuisine using local ingredients.

My husband loves Cajun food, but it can be high in sodium, which is tough on your body. (One Cajun standby, Tabasco sauce, is actually low in sodium.) After I gave him the recipe below for low-sodium Cajun seasoning, it became his go-to seasoning for everything from oven-blasted Brussels sprouts to baked chicken breasts.

Another hallmark of Cajun cooking is salty sausage, but a flavorful substitute that is much lower in sodium is smoked turkey breast. When you’re ready to spice up a winter dinner, make a dish that uses the four primary flavors of Cajun food – green or red bell peppers, onions, celery and garlic – along with this great salt-free Cajun seasoning.

Ballard Crime Watch: Man beaten with hatchet near Duckwalk, suspect arrested

Bronco thief arrested after assaulting victim with vehicle

Seattle Police arrested a car thief who stole a vehicle outside a home on the 800 block of N.W. 90th Street on Jan. 4. Officers were dispatched after they received a call that stated someone stole a Bronco while it was running in front of the home. According to a witness, the suspect looked suspicious while standing near the running vehicle. The witness didn’t see the suspect get inside, but later saw the victim run after the vehicle yelling, “He’s stealing my car.” The victim and his roommate followed the Bronco eastbound in the roommate’s car. The Bronco came to a stop in the middle of the street, and the victim went to the driver’s side door. When he opened it the suspect pulled away in reverse and knocked the victim to the ground. The Bronco sideswiped other vehicles in the process. The victim had no injuries and did not require medical attention. Police later found and arrested the suspect. He had the Bronco keys in his pocket and told police where he had parked the vehicle. The vehicle was recovered with minor damage.
