Comments wanted on King County’s plan for stormwater runoff

information from King County

Every year, King County updates its plan to manage stormwater runoff, drainage issues and water pollution problems. That Stormwater Management Program (SWMP) Plan is now available for review and comment.

The Washington State Department of Ecology considers stormwater runoff as the No. 1 water pollution problem in the state’s urban areas, with significant impacts to Puget Sound water quality.

To review this year’s plan, go to kingcounty.gov/stormwater. Comments on the plan are welcome through March 31. King County responds to and includes all public comments and shares them in the final plan submitted to the state Department of Ecology.

County stormwater employees review their work every year based on new science or practices as they learn more about water pollution and flows. Programs include how old pipes and treatment systems can be modernized and replaced, how impacts from stormwater flows can be reduced, and about water pollution sources.

This year’s focus includes addressing the effects of stormwater flows on natural water systems, and determining what data are needed as part of watershed-scale stormwater planning.

Rapid Load testing of pilings at Terminal 5 will take place Tuesday and Wednesday

The Port of Seattle has postponed today’s Rapid Load test at Terminal 5.

Peter McGraw of the Port said, "One of the reasons for the last test being more noticeable may have been its location at the south end of Terminal 5. When we reschedule, it will use less fuel than the last test, with the amount of fuel being the same as what was used in previous tests. We will also use noise and vibration monitoring devices in the vicinity of 37th & Prescott."

The tests will take place tomorrow and Thursday, (March 15 and 16) both at noon. These will be the last of the rapid load tests.

The video above details the testing process.

The Psychic View – A Peculiar Blindness

By Marjorie Young

I have gone through life encumbered with a rather curious condition; the inability to recognize people I know. I never thought to reveal this to anyone; it just seemed another weird ‘foible’ I am called upon to deal with…including my marked psychic abilities. However, this particular ‘handicap’ not only added to my sense of being ‘different’, but proved unendingly disconcerting, resulting in many an awkward social faux pas.

Upcoming AYPE presentation to explore 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition

The Pacific Northwest Historians Guild and the Queen Anne Historical Society present a special program on the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, Seattle's beautiful, first World's Fair. Local resident Dan Kerlee will present many rare and uncommonly seen images, many from private sources, of this spectacular and wide-ranging event. The six-month long exposition, several years in planning, helped present Seattle as an important emerging cultural, trade, and manufacturing center, and showcased the great and varied potential of Alaska as well as the entire West Coast and the Pacific Rim. Mr. Kerlee has been studying, writing, and speaking about the AYPE for over twenty years and is author of a website on the exposition, AYPE.com. He will share many unusual photographs, magazines, and other images gathered from across the country and around the world that greatly enhance our understanding of what it was like to be a visitor at the fair. The program will take at place Thursday, March 31 at 7 pm. in Seattle Pacific University's Ames Library, 3226 Sixth Avenue W. The Ames Library is located off 6th Avenue West, between W. Bertona and W. Dravus Streets on lower North Queen Anne hill.
