Burien police use Naloxone to save a man who overdose on heroin

Information from King County Sheriff

The Burien Police Department recently issued officers a Naloxone nasal-spray to treat opioid overdose victims. When someone overdoses on an opioid it can be difficult to wake the person and breathing may stop, leading to death. Naloxone spray, also referred to as Narcan, is F.D.A. approved and is known for its ability to quickly counter overdose effects.

On Wednesday around 7pm Burien officers responded to the 400 block of SW152 for a man that was not breathing. When they arrived they saw two employees doing CPR on the man. A friend of the man’s told police that that he had overdosed on heroin. An officer administered Naloxone nasal-spray and the man quickly started breathing. Within minutes he was conscious and taken to the hospital.

Naloxone nasal-spray is sprayed into one nostril of an overdose victim and results are usually evident within two minutes.

Officer Bryan Grozav took a report of a stolen 2006 Subaru Legacy around 2:00 am.. According to Seattle Police Grozav said that shortly after taking the report, he spotted the stolen Subaru driving on South Roxbury Street. When he attempted to follow the car it sped away.

A short time later, Sergeant Tamara Floyd saw the stolen vehicle on Roxbury driving at a high rate of speed. He reported that the vehicle was apparently burning the clutch since it was emitting a strong odor.

A half hour later Officer Sam Specht was near 9th Avenue SW and SW Trenton Street in Highland Park when he too smelled the burning clutch and witnessed the Subaru drive into an alley near 11th Ave SW. Hiram M. Chittenden Locks turn 100

Crab boats, schooners, tugs, pleasure yachts – all of them have passed through the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks since the first one did 100 years ago.

Yesterday the Ballard Locks passed its centennial. Though it was officially opened July 4 of 1917, the first ship passed through on August 3, 1916.

Named after Hiram M. Chittenden, a man who headed the Army Corps of Engineers in Seattle at the time. Chittenden supported building the locks and saw to it that its construction began in 1911. The locks weren’t formally named after Chittenden to start. They were initially called Government Locks. They were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Today the “Ballard Locks” are the busiest locks in the country moving 50,000 vessels a year. The site also attracts over 1.3 million tourists annually.
