SLIDESHOW: Alki Homestead remake taking shape; No completion date set but repairs are well underway

The Alki Homestead, a landmark and repository of many memories in West Seattle is slowly taking shape under the guidance of owner Dennis Schilling who officially took ownership of the historic property from Tom Lin in March of 2015.

The building, once known as the Fir Lodge was originally built in 1904.

It went through numerous changes throughout the years, including enclosing the porch, adding a second story, and an external kitchen, but it all fell into doubt when flames destroyed some of the interior and roof in a post Christmas fire in 2009.

Efforts to get approval for restoration plans were made but it wasn't until Schilling was able purchase the building and fashion a restoration plan that met with the Landmarks Preservation Board's approval that bringing the building back could move forward.

Alair is a gift shop that likes those that give back

The dream of many guys is to own a bar, and for many women a gift shop is a goal. Either of those businesses take luck, and a lot of hard work, but it helps to have a good idea to set you apart. That's the edge that the Alair Neighborhood Gift shop has.

Owner Shandon Armstrong said, "We have a focus on companies that give back and locally owned businesses. We are constantly changing out inventory so every time you come in there's something new to look at."

A quick stroll through the shop is proof of her statement. With over 1100 different items from books, to clothing, to cards, and decor items there's literally something for almost everybody. Whimsical pillows, bags, drink mixes, lotions, candles, and a lot more all seem to be chosen with both taste and an eye for kindness.

Armstrong who hails from Toledo, Ohio came out to Seattle a few years ago and fell in love with the area, in particular West Seattle. "I love this community," she said.

Alair's hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10am to 6pm, and Sunday 11am to 5pm. Closed Mondays. It is located at the corner of Hinds Street SW and California Ave. SW.

Washington’s basic driver’s license fails federal REAL ID requirements

House, Senate bills could cure the problem

By Tim Gruver
WNPA Olympia News Bureau

Your driver’s license might not fly with airport security in less than a year’s time if the state fails to meet federal identification and travel laws.

Enacted by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act established minimum-security standards for Homeland Security to apply when examining state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards to prevent their use by terrorists. The law requires travelers to provide proof of legal residency with documents such as a passport or enhanced driver’s license.

Non-compliant states without deadline extensions have until Jan. 22, 2018, to meet national standards. Washington, which was granted its final extension in 2015, is one of two-dozen states yet to comply with the REAL ID Act.

HB 1041 Sponsored by Rep. Judy Clibborn, D-Mercer Island, and SB 5008 sponsored by Sen. Curtis King, R-Yakima, would satisfy the 41 requirements included in the federal REAL ID Act. The bills are based on a measure developed by the Department of Licensing (DOL) in cooperation with Gov. Jay Inslee.

Soup’s On at Copine -- Ballard chef Shaun McCrain shines at helm of new culinary destination

By Lindsay Peyton

Ballard chef Shaun McCrain is so at home in the kitchen at his restaurant Copine that it’s hard to imagine him anywhere else.

He and his wife Jill Kinney named the establishment the French word for “girlfriend” – and explain that the place functions as a pal for them. It’s not only their creation, their baby -- but also where they most want to be, an extension of their home, a friend they always hanging around.

They opened last July – and the location has already become a Ballard hotspot as well as a destination for diners from around the city.

“We have young cooks who come in for inspiration and we have neighborhood people who come in because they were just passing by,” McCrain said.

The menu is contemporary American cuisine – with French roots and a focus on local ingredients.

Starters include Dungeness crab salad served with radish and citrus, a foie gras terrine with black sesame and apple and Hawaiian hearts of palm with heirloom beets and cardamom poached pear.

Upthegrove calls for free, expanded late night public transportation on Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve holidays

Information provided by King County

King County Councilmember Dave Upthegrove introduced legislation to advocate for free and expanded public transportation service on the Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve holidays to reduce drunk driving. Last year, the Washington State Patrol made 24 arrests for driving under the influence on New Year’s Eve and 223 arrests over a five-day period around the Fourth of July.

“We want to make it easy for people to make the right decision and leave their car at home as they ring in the New Year or celebrate the Fourth of July,” said Councilmember Dave Upthegrove. “Ensuring that buses and trains run late into the evening on these holidays makes everyone safer.”

Several other cities and counties across the country offer free transit service on New Year’s Eve including Chicago, Los Angeles, Portland, and San Francisco, among others.
