Fifteen years for West 5 is only the beginning

By Sarah Mackay

Dean Overton knows all about positive vibe. After a longtime career in the record industry, he created this cool and laid-back quintessential lounge on California known as West 5. It’s a landmark, iconic lounge with a huge departure from its previous purpose as a shooting range and bowling alley years past. Dean partnered with lifelong friend, Dave Mountoure,  who left a jet set tech job to transform the space with neon, ultra comfortable furniture and relics from past West Seattle drinking establishments.

Why celebrate West 5 today? After fifteen years they’re still going strong. Their original vision can be felt and seen throughout from employees who quickly become family to supercool, vintage décor. Happy, longtime loyal employees work alongside Dean and Dave at what they all call their “second home”.

Foster girls hold back furious Fife rally

By Gerardo Bolong

CONTRIBUTING WRITER

FIFE - Foster built a sizable lead in the fourth quarter before repulsing a ferocious Fife rally on the way to a 50-45 SPSL 2A basketball win at Fife High School on Tues., Jan. 8.

Foster improved its North division record to 6-0 and 10-1 overall.

Leading 46-29 following a Meera Santos three-point goal with just more than three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs nearly gave up the ghost beginning with a three-point play from Breanna Hernandez.

Turnovers and a drop off in field goal shooting by Foster enabled the Trojans to keep the ball rolling for a 14-0 surge that was capped by an Alyce Sprenger rebound basket at the 43-second mark.

With the score 46-43, the seemingly safe lead was in dire jeopardy.

Rudy Viggiano 12/4/1954 - 12/27/2018

Skidding in sideways laughing and enjoying every minute of life, Rudy has gone fishing one last time. Whether he was in Yakutat fishing for halibut, Puget Sound fishing for salmon, Cabo fishing for marlin, or San Diego fishing for blue fin or yellow tail tuna, fishing made Rudy happy.  Hunting was a close second.  Tromping through the trees for deer or elk with his son and friends, the “rat pack”, made Rudy happy.
