Councilmember Lorena Gonzalez answers our questions about how she would address the critical issues facing Seattle

By Jean Godden

Columnist, Westside Seattle

We asked mayor candidate Lorena Gonzalez 11 questions to get a sense of her views on how she would respond as mayor.

*1. What plans do you have to reduce homelessness?

I grew up in poverty, and lived in labor camps without toilets or running water as my family worked in the orchards of central Washington. So I see our growing homelessness crisis as, at its core, both a housing availability and a poverty emergency.

OP Ed- We need stronger leadership, not less enforcement

By Brendan Kolding

King County Board of Health Code 9.15 designates the failure to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle a civil infraction.  Law enforcement officers are empowered to stop people who are riding without a helmet and to issue a ticket.  The fine is $30 before court fees.  The purpose of this ordinance is "to protect and preserve the public health and welfare."  This is an incentive to be safe, similar to SMC 11.58.198, which requires occupants of motor vehicles to wear seat belts.

Mike McQuaid says next election is a "Complete reset"

Community organizer is running for Seattle City Council Position 8

When Mike Mcquaid paid a brief visit to West Seattle on Thursday as part of his Seattle City Council campaign kick off. Westside Seattle asked him a few questions to take his temperature regarding where we are and what he might bring to the city. He's a veteran community organizer having been centrally involved in both the South Lake Union trolley project and the makeover of the former Key Arena (now Climate Pledge). He's running for Position 8, one of the two at large seats on the council. It is currently held by Teresa Mosqueda.

Why are you running?

I was influenced by my Grandfather and other members of my family who played really, important roles in the development of the city and I'm in a spot in my career where I've amassed a really strong community leadership background.

Grocery Associations file lawsuit against City of Burien to halt grocery worker extra pay

New city ordinance called unequal and illegal

information from NWGA

The Northwest Grocery Association (NWGA) and the Washington Food Industry Association (WFIA) have filed a lawsuit against the City of Burien challenging an ordinance approved by the Burien City Council that took effect today,

Wednesday, February 17th at 12:01 a.m. The ordinance mandates extra pay of $5.00 per hour for some grocery store employees, treating essential businesses and workers unfairly and bypassing collective bargaining agreements.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court Western District of Washington, asks the court to declare the new ordinance void and to grant a preliminary and permanent injunction against

enforcement of the ordinance. The suit will likely track with a similar suit filed against the City of Seattle on February 3rd.
