Happy Father’s Day Dad

Even though Father's Day isn't until June, our Publisher Emeritus, Gerald S. Robinson's birthday is April 6, 1920. So for us.. it's a day to celebrate our father.

Outside my home office window there is a yellow rose given to me by my older brother when our father died.The flowers it offers in spring are a living reminder of a great dad. 

As one of five sons of Gerald and Lee Robinson, my memories are of a lucky and loving childhood.  I always wonder how Dad did what he did while growing his business as a newspaperman. He took us fishing in lakes and streams and in Elliott Bay and at Neah Bay and Sekiu and many of the state’s big rivers. And sometimes in the summer, he would leave his office early and take us to places like Lake Wilderness to swim.

Saying farewell to places we loved

This isn't a good time to own a restaurant or to work at one. Nor is it a good time to be a restaurant critic, forced to report dozens of closures each week. The plague year has taken a toll and closed far too many places we had learned to love.

Most recently, I found myself grieving over news that Tom Douglas has permanently closed the Dahlia Lounge, one of his flagship restaurants, the one that featured his memorable coconut cream pie. A food lover’s only comfort was learning that Douglas plans to move his Serious Pie (gourmet pizza) eatery into the Fourth Avenue location and keep open Dahlia Bakery where they sell slices of cream pie.

Wind Advisory from National Weather Service notes 50 mph gusts

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory that takes effect at 12 Noon on March 28. They expect gusts up to 50mph with sustained winds up to 35 mph. Expect power outages and tree limbs down.

* WHAT...Southwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected.

* WHERE...Tacoma Area, Hood Canal Area, Everett and Vicinity, Bremerton and Vicinity and Seattle and Vicinity.

* WHEN...From noon today to 6 PM PDT this evening.

* IMPACTS...Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle. Secure outdoor objects.

'Bey' the eagle is back home but her story is far from over
West Seattle naturalist and photographer shares her story

For the last 30 days I have been in a whirlwind of anxiety over a sick eagle. I have spent multiple hours each day tracking, mapping, researching, corresponding, analyzing, engaging the community, fretting and fundraising. The deeper I dug, the more invested I became and the more humbled I felt as I watched our community come together to help this particular animal. I also used my skills as a scientific translator to explain why, and how I was doing what I was doing. End-game, get the eagle home, and hopefully reunited with her mate.  I needed all this information and participation to prove her home was Alki, and we did just that.

Girl who died at Safeway identified as Leah Bigwood
Sophomore at West Seattle High School was 15 years old

The young woman who died of an apparent drug overdose in the Safeway store March 24, was Leah Bigwood. She was the daughter of Nichole Bigwood and Johnny Dearfield and was a student at West Seattle High School. The case is under investigation.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by Leah’s aunt  Ashten Coons, of Port Orchard to raise money for funeral services. She wrote of Leah, “Her 15 years were filled with so much love, and so many laughs... Leah was incredibly creative and talented... she will be missed more than she could ever imagine. Nichole, her mother, who is experiencing incredible loss and sadness that most of us could never imagine… has to have a funeral for her baby girl, so I kindly ask for donations to help make this time just a little less difficult.”

Ballard's Daytona Strong creates Scandinavian Affinity Group for locals who miss gathering

With all the uncertainty still hovering around when pandemic gathering restrictions will be a thing of the past, a Ballard-area woman is creating a special online community for those with an interest in Scandinavian life and culture. The Heart & Huset is now open for founding members, until Monday night (March 29, 2021, at 9pm PST).

“It’s no secret that those with Scandinavian roots—or who just appreciate the culture—love to gather,” said Daytona Strong. “If the local lodges of Scandinavian organizations are any indication, there’s quite a tight-knit community that develops when people with a common affinity for all things Scandinavian come together.”
