Ballard High School’s musical Spring Awakening rocks with teen rebellion and questioning

May 6, 7, 8 and 13, 14, 15, 2021 7:30 p.m.

information from Ballard High School Playmakers

The Ballard High School (BHS) Playmakers will stage the rock musical Spring Awakening virtually on May 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, reminding viewers everywhere that “we’ve all got our junk.”

The nature of all teenagers is to question their parents. Back in 1890’s Germany on the cusp of the Industrial Revolution, things were no different. Spring Awakening is based on German playwright Frank Wedekind’s controversial play from 1891. It was so scandalous in its day for addressing sex violence and suicide that it was not staged until 1906. This contemporary production was first staged on Broadway in 2006, with a rock soundtrack by Duncan Sheik.

The Lee Side: 'Old Fashioned Mamas'

Editor's Note: This column by Lee Robinson first appeared in the White Center News in May of 1965. We share it again, well because it still has resonance today and because we loved her.

It would be very difficult to sell this "old-fashioned mama" on the idea of planned parenthood. The world is glutted with people and I recognize the problems that overpopulation can bring. But to me there is something very cold and matter of fact and even crass about pre-determining the exact number of offspring to be allotted per couple. It isn't cricket and it certainly isn't human.

I recall that as each new child arrived in our little nest, the father-bird was pretty concerned about scratching up more worms for the new egg-hatch.

"What are you worried about? I'd ask. "Consider the lilies of the field and like that,"

Pat's View: What our newspaper did

By Patrick Robinson

There’s a sense of resignation and sadness when a small newspaper closes. The Westside Seattle newspaper (incorporating the West Seattle Herald, Highline Times and Ballard News Tribune stopped printing as of April 30). Many view it as inevitable, just changing times, and some even see it as progress. But as with many things so much of what a newspaper has done, and what it represents is either forgotten or overlooked. Let me remind you of a few things.

Small newspapers have served as the binding element for communities almost everywhere around the world. The shared stories, through a single point of presence, have meant that many can see and share the triumph and tragedy, the communal purpose and a more universal recognition of who we all are. When that is spread out across social media, apps, blogs, and emails, it loses focus and power.

Chief Sealth Baseball takes back the "West Seattle Bowl" trophy

By Chelle

CONTRIBUTING WRITER

After a three-year stint at West Seattle High, the infamous "West Seattle Bowl Trophy" was recaptured by Chief Sealth HIgh with a dominating win of 10-2 Thursday afternoon.

With a Seahawks "bat around" and a half in the opening inning, it was obvious they were serious about bringing the trophy back this year. Almost cycling thru the batting lineup twice, Sealth scored seven runs, leaving the Wildcats no option but to dig deep and attempt to rally all game long.

West Seattle did not give up easily, providing several great at-bat battles which often ended in a fly-out. It gave the Sealth sophomore pitchers Ryan Moore (#13, 95 pitches) and Luke Sketchley (#20) quite the workout. The closing pitcher for Sealth was shortstop senior Marcel Jones (#12). Jones had just hit a two-run homer the previous inning,

Why use a shortstop as the closing pitcher?
