Woman’s body recovered after diving incident

Update 12:45pm Sunday

After Seattle Fire and Police ceased the search for a missing diver on Saturday night independent divers went searching this morning and found a woman’s body at a depth of 35 feet near Cove 2 in West Seattle. Seattle Fire Dept. divers responded and recovered the body. It is not confirmed as yet it is the same woman but the King county medical examiner is on the scene and will perform tests to arrive at the final identification.
 

Update 11:28pm

Rescue Boat 5 has discontinued their search, The Water Taxi was allowed to dock. and passengers could disembark. it has now left the pier.

Update 11:24pm

All units other than Rescue 1 and Rescue Boat 5 for the Seattle Fire Department have been pulled from the scene and put back in regular service as the operation transitions to recovery from rescue.

34th District Democrats offer presentation on Compassion Seattle charter amendment on homelessness

A controversial campaign to alter Seattle’s city charter and force it to handle homelessness differently, known as Compassion Seattle, has officially qualified to appear on the November ballot. Since Charter Amendment 29 was announced earlier this year, it has received mixed feedback. Candidates for the mayoral primary next month are almost evenly split on it. While few homeless nonprofit leaders and advocates have spoken out in favor of it, many others have started a campaign called House Our Neighbors to encourage Seattle voters to say “No.”

White Center businesses banding together to support fire victims

Pending permits, the White Center business community is throwing a block party to benefit the eight businesses whose livelihoods were lost in the fire that took place on July 5. That fire is being investigated as an arson. Of those, only Rat City Tat2 has reopened. while The Lumberyard Bar has found a new location across the street it will take several months for the build out. 

On Sunday, Aug. 29, the plan is to shut down the block between Roxbury Street and 98th Street SW for a party featuring local vendors in booths, food, a raffle, a bar and food crawl, live music at Drunky Two Shoes BBQ, and an auction. The hours would be 12 Noon to 5pm.

North Highline community members have been telling King County about their interests and needs for their community. More than 300 comments have been submitted via the county's online survey for North Highline.

The county has also offered a series of workshops on affordable housing and displacement risk in North Highline and Skyway-West Hill.

Sooty Bark Disease is starting to infect West Seattle Trees

This is the fifth in a series of columns prepared by the staff at the award winning West Seattle Nursery.  The Nursery is open for shopping, following COVID guidelines and they offer an array of trees, shrubs, bedding plants, garden supplies, decor and gift items. This lethal fungal disease was first seen in the Seattle area in 2017, and it appears to be spreading.  Three trees in the Alki Beach area have been identified with the disease recently. Species that seem most susceptible are sycamore maples, Japanese and Norway maples, horse chestnuts, and our native big leaf maples and Pacific dogwoods.

Lowrider Block Party coming up Aug. 7 in White Center

The Seattle Lowrider Block Party is coming up Aug. 7, 2021 in White Center on 17th SW between Roxbury and Delridge Way SW. It's presented by the Nepantla Cultural Arts Gallery.]

This free community event will feature lowrider cars (customized vehicles with hydraulic jacks that allow the chassis to be lowered nearly to the road that are often customized in other ways with intricate paint work, upholstery and sometimes even matching baby carriages), music, a lowrider art show, live art, vendors and food. It will run from 12 Noon to 6pm.

The live art will be provided by Jose Rodriguez III, Desmond Hansen, and Angelina Villalobos.

Which candidates for Seattle Mayor would support an effort to learn how the West Seattle Bridge failed?

Westside Seattle reached out to the leading contenders in the Seattle Mayor's race and posed the following question:

"In the last online meeting regarding the West Seattle Bridge, SDOT’s Heather Marx explained that the reason the West Seattle Bridge failed was  "The problem was an imperfect understanding of how much post tensioning the bridge needed.” AND "The bridge was built, according to the standards of the day. At that time there was less knowledge in the engineering community about some of the properties of concrete and a phenomenon that's called creep."
