Burien Neighborhood Matching Fund supports tree planting and maintenance

Fund designed to increase Burien's tree canopy

Information from the City of Burien

The City of Burien is launching a neighborhood matching fund to encourage projects that foster community and increase neighborhood tree canopy cover in an equitable manner.

The City will provide up to $5,000 per project with the neighborhood matching the City’s contribution with local resources of volunteer labor, donated materials or professional services, or cash.

“The Burien City Council set an ambitious goal to increase our tree canopy cover to 40% by 2038,” said Adolfo Bailon, Burien City Manager. “To reach that goal, we need all of Burien to contribute to protecting and increasing our tree canopy. This fund will support community efforts to grow our urban forest.”

Projects that qualify for a neighborhood matching grant can either involve tree planting or tree maintenance. They must be within the Burien city limits and meet other specific criteria.

We were there at the moment it opened

After 909 days the West Seattle Bridge is at long last open. It came as a bit of surprise since Seattle Department of Transportation staffers had said for weeks that it would open on Sunday Sept. 18.

West Seattle Bridge passes strength test: It's ready to open on Sunday

Watch the video of the test

information from Seattle Department of Transportation

We have completed our analysis of strength tests conducted earlier this week on the West Seattle Bridge, and the bridge has passed its final safety test. This data confirms the bridge is strong, safe, and ready to reopen on Sunday, September 18, as planned.

Earlier this week, we conducted load testing on the bridge to confirm that it is structurally sound and able to reopen thanks to the repairs we’ve completed over the past 2 ½ years. This testing process involved driving up to a dozen 80,000-pound trucks on the bridge deck, then actively measuring the bridge’s response to the added weight using the new sensors.
