Otter on the Rocks celebrates a year of growth and craft cocktails

Tanner Jitmongkonkul and his wife Erin had never run a bar before opening Otter on the Rocks a year ago. He came to the US from Thailand in 2004. He tried a few other business ideas prior including one making some unique snack/dessert style items but the pandemic made that unfeasible. When the location at 4210 Admiral Way became available he and his wife took a chance on his idea for a high quality cocktail bar that serves only flatbreads and cookies.

"On the rocks" is a cocktail term, but Otter? "We wanted something fun and playful. The otter was the first animal that fascinated my brain when I discovered the Otter for the first time at the Seattle Aquarium. You can see them underwater."

Homelessness and transportation network issues at SEA airport getting more attention

City of SeaTac has a different approach

Homelessness in Seattle is nothing new and the often visible encampments and RV's on roadsides get a lot of public attention largely because so many of them are out in the open.

But less well known, perhaps because in the ebb and flow of human movement they blend in, are homeless people at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA).

The Port of Seattle says it's trying to direct these people into temporary shelter but there are few places in the area for people to go. There are in fact no cold weather shelters in the city of SeaTac. The closest is in Des Moines, some 3.5 miles away.

James William Guenther

April 11, 1935 - January 28, 2023

Jim Guenther was born yearning for better things for himself, his family, and everybody else.

He once said he was the wrong son to a good dad, growing up on a rural Nebraska farm where he could not stop asking why.

Jim left the farm at 16 to find answers. His curiosity and ability got him a football scholarship as well as entrance into all of America’s top military academies. His poor vision kept him out of the academies. But his Air Force experience and the GI bill opened the door to college, a Masters degree, debate, Young Democrats and a lifetime passion for serving others.

Jim did not just want to serve, but to accomplish things no one else had mustered. Over six decades, he did it again and again.
