SAKA: Changes coming soon to the Duwamish Head viewpoint parking area

District 1 City Councilmember Rob Saka shared this update on changes coming for the Duwamish Head viewpoint parking area this spring and summer.

Because Alki’s Duwamish Head is a prime location for ongoing loud street racing and criminal activities into the early morning hours, I identified funding in the budget to study and implement a reconfiguration of the parking in 2025. According to SDOT, the project is expected to be completed by the end of June pending a number of variables, including weather and emergencies, crew schedules, design variables, sign production, and procurement of materials. Outreach (primarily to inform nearby residents) will happen in early May, and construction will happen throughout late May and early June. This will include grinding angled parking stalls, installing barriers, and updating channelization and signs.

Floating piers at Don Armeni being reinstalled

Bellingham Marine crews are working to complete the retrofit after the initial design failed; New security enhancements are now in place

Bellingham Marine Industries (BMI) is currently working on the Don Armeni Boat Ramp Replacement Project in West Seattle. The boat ramp initially reopened in March 2024, but in the interim, the hinges between the floats failed, and the concrete on the floats was spalling and cracking.

To address these structural issues, BMI is removed all the concrete floats, except those connected to the abutment on both the north and south sides of the ramp. The removal process began on November 7, 2024, and the floats have been stored within the boat launch facility parking lot. BMI collaborated with Seattle Parks and Recreation on a retrofit design, and the replacement floats are now being installed.
