With summer approaching, what better way to kick off the season than with the annual Open Boat Weekend and Swap Meet at the Shilshole Bay Marina? Whether you’re a boat lover or not, this event will have something for everyone.
Sponsored by the Seattle Boat Show, the event is Saturday, June 4 and Sunday, June 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the donations from the weekend supporting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The Leukemia Cup Regatta on June 11 is partly funded by the annual Boat Weekend.
“I was blown away by the incredible support of the community at Open Boat Weekend [last year[,” said Brianna Rockenstire, Leukemia Cup Regatta coordinator for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
“Not only did people get to enjoy a beautiful day on the water, but they also donated almost $2,000 to the local chapter. … These donations help us fund local researchers and provide critical financial assistance for blood cancer patients in Washington and Alaska.”
The Boat Weekend’s events include a chance to catch a 30- to 45-foot yacht for an hour-long sailboat ride on the Puget Sound; yachts will embark every half-hour. About 150 people enjoyed this last year.
“I had my first sailboat ride for only $10 donation, and the coolest thing is that the captain let me drive the boat and help with the sail. I am totally excited about coming back this year,” said Miranda Lee, Port of Seattle marketing assistant.
A new component this year is Open Houses. The public can tour the live-aboard boats at Shilshole Bay Marina and see how the live-aboard community lives.
The Swap Meet, geared to boat owners, will go on all weekend. This allows people to swap items and grab bargains. Last year about 15 swappers participated.
Refreshments will also be available, including hot dogs, chips, and soda.
"Last year's boat show was quite a success, attracting large numbers of boaters and non-boaters,” said Peter McGraw, Port of Seattle’s Seaport/Real Estate media officer. “The gear swap meet was a hit amongst boaters, and all kinds of visitors and non-boaters enjoyed the $10 boat rides. Plus the weather was great, which I'm sure helped boost the participation. It's a great community event.”
