Approximately 25,000 black bears live in Washington along with a couple dozen grizzlies. Bear ecologist Chris Morgan will visit the Woodland Park Zoo to demonstrate what happens when you don't "bear proof" your campsite and how to avoid attracting bears as Woodland Park Zoo’s grizzlies eat their way through a mock campsite.

As part of Brown Bear Car Wash sponsored Bear Affair & Big Howl for Wolves event, this demonstration highlights the world of bears as renowned bear ecologist and adventurer Chris Morgan makes a guest appearance for bear demonstrations and a book signing.

Chris Morgan, co-founder of the Grizzly Bear Outreach Project, was spotlighted last month on PBS’s Nature, Bears of the Last Frontier. Morgan will narrate the campsite demo and will sign his companion book to the three-part series, which contains behind-the-scenes original content. The special series followed Morgan on a year-long, 3,000-mile exploration into bear country across the length of five dramatically diverse Alaskan ecosystems, observing and filming up close these fascinating animals and the people that share bear habitat. DVDs of the series also will be for sale at the book signing and in the ZooStores.

Partaking in this demonstration, are the zoo’s grizzly brothers, 17-year-old Keema and Denali. Currently weighing 730 pounds, the bears arrived at the zoo in 1994 from Washington State University, which maintains a small collection to conduct a long-term study on bear nutrition.

The grizzlies campsite demonstration will take place Saturday, June 4 at 11:00 a.m. The Bear Affair & Big Howl for Wolves event takes place all day Saturday, June 4, from 9:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Chris Morgan will be doing a book signing starting at noon.
