The free-spirited Solstice Parade, part of the Fremont Fair, welcomes the summer with plenty of color and quirkiness.
The summer solstice is just around the corner, which means that Fremont is the place to be this weekend for the annual Fremont Fair and the popular Solstice parade.
The 40th annual Fremont Fair returns to celebrate the arrival of summer with events that showcase all the quirkiness that resides in the self-proclaimed "Center of the Universe".
Held annually in mid-June to coincide with the Summer Solstice, the free event draws more than 100,000 people to celebrate Fremont’s official motto “Delibertus Quirkus” – Freedom to be Peculiar.
Fair highlights includes the free-spirited parade with the body-painted bicyclists, four music stages, craft and art booths, street performers, decorated art cars, and more.
Lacey Lybecker from Bold Hat Productions said they added Dads & Dogs Day events on Sunday. The Fair will celebrate dads and dogs with events such as PCC Natural Markets' Grilling Competition as well as Dog Parade paralleling Saturday's Fremont Solstice Parade
"I am really looking forward to the PCC Natural Markets Grilling Competition as I'm a huge fan of cooking competitions in general," Lybecker said. "It will be fun to see which dads from the audience are chosen to judge the competition and choose which PCC chef prevails."
At the Redhook Main Stage, local favorite music acts will rock until the sun goes down and participants can recover from a day full of walking and dancing with Solstice Yoga on Sunday morning.
Another popular event at the Fremont Fair is the Seattle Art Car Blowout. This is the largest gathering of Art Cars in the Northwest. Over 75 decorated cars will be on display in the Burke Building Parking lot on the Rocket Block.
Lybecker said the best bets on getting to the Fremont Fair are walking, biking, or busing it. Detailed directions and tips on getting to the Fair can be found at: www.fremontfair.org/directions-festival-map/.
