The Beavers celebrated their senior night and last game of the season with a win against the Redmond Mustangs.
The Ballard football team beat the Redmond Mustangs 29 to 20 Saturday at Memorial in their last game of the season. It was also senior night for the team, the marching band and the cheerleaders.
The Beavers took the lead early and were able to hold on for the win, despite some big penalties and an injury. Jesse Scott, one of the 13 seniors on the team, came down awkwardly on his ankle after defending a pass in the third quarter and had to be carried off the field.
Ballard capitalized on a fumble early in the first and drove the ball 74 yards, scoring on a successful trick play when Max Marshall found Kyle Keunzi. Later on in the first the Beavers forced another fumble, but a penalty negated the play.
After a long first quarter, the Beavers and the Mustangs traded series until Jordan McColloch broke off a 45-yard run to pay dirt in the second, putting the Beavers up 15-0 after the successful two point conversion.
The Mustangs kicker, Chris Schumacher, put Redmond on the board with a 35-yard field goal after Ballard stopped the Mustangs at the 19-yard line. He also made a 44-yarder at the end of the half, after the Beavers went up 22-3 on Verduin’s 6-yard pass to Blake Sechler.
The third quarter was relatively quit, but near the end Ballard put together a drive that ended in a 16-yard touchdown run by Dominic King that put the Beavers up 29-12.
In the fourth, the Mustangs completed a 51-yard play when the ball was tipped by two Beaver defenders and caught by a Redmond receiver, which put the Mustangs at the Ballard 34-yard line. After the third down play that Scott was injured on, the Beaver defense made a big fourth down stop to gain possession.
The Beavers began to run out the clock, and Verduin’s punt put the Mustangs on their own 19-yard line with 4 and a half minutes left in the game. Redmond started to put together a drive when Eric Brake picked off a pass that would’ve ended the game. The play was called back, however, after a Ballard penalty.
The Mustangs cut the lead to 9 after a successful two-point conversion put the score at 29-20. The Mustangs then attempted an onside-kick, but the Beavers recovered. Things got a little heated in the ball pile, as penalty flags were thrown and one of the Ballard players was ejected. But the Beavers retained possession, and ran out the clock to hold on for the victory.
