Seattle City Council joins Councilmember Mike O’Brien's quest to find a space for people living in their cars in Ballard by proposing that $20,000 of the Mayor's 2012 budget will go towards the Safe Parking Pilot Program in Ballard.
City Council finished preliminary voting on their modifications to the Mayor’s 2012 budget on Thursday, Nov 10, and presented their actions to rebalance the Mayor's proposals.
"Operating the leanest government possible while maintaining critical services was our overarching goal. We believe we have reached that goal," said Councilmember and Budget Committee Chair Jean Godden in a statement.
While certain earmarks like High-Capacity Transit planning, the merger of the Office of Housing and Office of Economic Development, and a community building advisor were rejected, the City Council focused on maintaining funding for public safety, health services and food programs, and housing for the most vulnerable.
"This budget presented us with many challenges and difficult choices, but I believe we reaffirmed the City's commitment to Seattle's neighborhoods. From the Safe Parking Pilot Program in Ballard to keeping community centers open to preserving support for our beloved p-patches, Council stands by our neighborhoods and their priorities," said Councilmember Mike O'Brien, Chair of the Seattle Public Utilities and Neighborhoods Committee.
Working with community partners, such as faith-based organizations and local food providers, Council was able to maximize opportunities through joint investments to fund these programs.
Council proposes $20,000 for the Safe Parking Pilot Program, $5,000 less than what O'Brien asked for.
The Council also proposed $435,000 to meet the increased demand for shelter and housing for homeless families with children in Seattle.
The funding package is intended to expand capacity along the spectrum of services, from shelter or temporary housing to permanent housing for homeless families with children.
The formal approval of the 2012 budget will take place November 21 at 2 p.m.
