11:00 a.m. on June 30th. 65th block of 23rd Ave NW

Police responded to reports of an assault in Ballard on the morning of June 30. A security guard said that the suspect hit the victim in the head with a coffee cup, causing a bleeding wound. The suspect ran away when the security guard approached him. The victim had already been taken to the hospital when the responding officer arrived at the scene, but the officer later spoke with the victim.

The victim said that he was standing by the coffee machine when he saw the suspect approaching. He told the suspect that he had heard from other homeless people that the suspect was a thief. The suspect then hit the victim over the head with a ceramic coffee mug. The victim’s shirt was soaked with blood when the officer saw him, and the emergency room doctor said that the victim would need about 10 staples to close the wound in his head. The victim said that he wanted to press charges against the suspect.

8:32 p.m. on June 29th. NW 58th St and 22nd Ave NW

Police responded to reports of a disturbance on the night of June 29th. The complainant said that he was eating inside a Ballard business when he saw a man enter with a case of beer. He told the man that the business did not allow beer inside and took it away from him. When he threw the beer outside, some of the cans broke. A few hours later, the man and his friend confronted the complainant. The friend pulled out a pair of scissors and walked toward the complainant, who feared for his safety and left the area. The complainant described the man as a bald 40-year-old white male with a mustache and wearing a blue jacket. The suspect was not found in the area.

1:17 p.m. on June 29th. 5th block of NW Bright St

A couple reported a burglary at their apartment after seeing a former tenant of the building in the area that day. The victims left for work at 7:30 a.m. and noticed that the former tenant was standing across the street looking at the apartment. When one of the victims returned home around 1:00 p.m., the man was still there and was standing next to a large, heavyset man. The victim then discovered that her apartment had been burglarized. Her computer, computer accessories, and TV had been stolen. She believed the suspect(s) had entered the apartment through an open rear window.

The responding officer ran the former tenant’s name through the system and found multiple warrants out for his arrest. Neighbors said that he frequently steals to support his drug habit and pawns the items in pawnshops along Aurora Ave.

4:43 p.m. on June 28th. 87th block of 18th Ave NW

The residents of a Ballard-area home called police after discovering that a burglar had entered their house through a doggie door. The burglary occurred between 10:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The house had been locked, and the suspect entered through an 18” x 12” doggie door and then left through a regular door. The suspect stole only electronics, ignoring jewelry and credit cards, and also scattered the victims’ underwear around the bedroom.

7:46 a.m. on June 28th. 1st block of NW 85th St

Police responded to reports of a burglary at a construction site on the morning of June 28th. During the previous night someone had damaged the vent in the electrical room door and then stole copper wire, a power splitter, and a ladder. The responding officer found a cigarette package in the room and another one outside. Both were submitted for fingerprint analysis.

Across the street the officer found an air-compressor and an electrical coil hidden in an alleyway. The complainant said that the coil was his and had also been stolen. Two homeowners in the area said that they saw two tall white males looking at the hidden items. The complainant said that numerous burglaries had occurred at the site in the past several weeks and he was planning to install video surveillance.
