The Ballard News-Tribune sits down to play Battleship with Marcia Wiley, of wileywares.com
Did you know yesterday was International PARK(ing) Day? Well, neither did a lot of people.
According to the website, "PARK(ing) Day is a annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into 'PARK(ing)' spaces: temporary public places."
For the event, local Ballardite Marcia Wiley, of wileyware.com, joined forces with some of her happiness-spreading comrades and turned a couple of parallel parking spots on Market St and 22 Ave NW into a makeshift park and community center. For any passersby who weren't too weirded out, they had peanutbutter and jelly sandwiches, a Star Wars Puzzle, arts and crafts and a game of Battleship. They also had signs on display with inspirational messages, such as "Be YOU" and "Yes and Yay!"
The Ballard News-Tribune sat down to play Battleship with Wiley, but was unfortunately unable to finish -- though, with a Battleship and a destroyer sunk, and a cruiser shot, things were looking grim.
Pedestrian and driver reactions to the park ranged from complete aversion to interest and laughter.
The Star Wars puzzle was never finished.
