Long time Ballard Physician Martin Burkland, passed away peacefully on August 10th surrounded his family, after a long, fulfilling and rich life. He was born on April 12th 1923 to Martin and Lessie Burkland in Astoria, Oregon. At age 12 he moved to Seattle with his family where he lived most of his life, with the exception of winters in Arizona with his loving wife Cal, after he retired.
He graduated from Queen Anne High School in 1941, and entered the University of Washington. He was a proud member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and until his death he met with his close fraternity brothers once a month for lunch. He was in the Navy V12 program at the UW and served on the destroyer Henderson, during WWII. He continued his involvement with the Navy, as an active member of the Naval War College until 2007. After graduating with a BS degree, and finishing his military service, he was accepted as a member of the 1st class at the University of Washington Medical School, graduating in 1950. He completed his internship and residencies at Swedish and Seattle VA Hospitals.
He established a General Practice in Ballard and served the Ballard community for 42 years, retiring in 1995. He was Chief of Staff at Ballard Community Hospital in 1958, 1980 and 1981. He was also a partner in developing the Tallman Medical Center in 1959, the Ballard Convalescent Center in 1965 and pioneered the States first full time Physician staffed Emergency Room at Ballard Community Hospital in 1966. At that time there was only one other facility so staffed in theUnited States. He also served on the Board of Directors for B&J Industrial Supply, Co., a company founded by his father in 1936.
In 1974, he married his loving, lifelong companion, Cal, combining his four children and her four children, into one large wonderful family.
He was deeply loved by his family and the many lives he touched during his life’s journey. His legacy is leading by example, living an honorable life and giving unconditionally to others. Thank you for touching and enriching our lives, you were adored and respected by all.
He was preceded in death by his brother Chuck (Joan), Grandson Kristian Burkland and Granddaughter Katie MacPherson. He is survived by his wife of 40 years Cal, his children: Sue, Martin, Kris, Nancy (Brent) and Cal’s children: Rhonda (Jim), Lynda, Jay (Charmaine), and Merridith (Eric). He is also survived by 7 grandchildren: Misty, Jessica, Beth, Tyler, Patrick, Scott and Elizabeth, 7 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
At his request there will be no service. A family celebration of his life will be at a later date.
