Ballard singer and songwriter, Kristin Chambers, performed her title track "Everything Woman" on King 5 TV's New Day Northwest last Oct. 22 to kick off a month-long fundraiser.
All music download sales from Chamber’s website, www.kristinchambers.com, are going to the Susan G. Komen Organization (SGKO).
After the performance Chambers shared her thoughts.
"The performance was fantastic. The people at New Day are so sweet and professional. I was really taken by what an amazing interviewer and host Margaret Larson is. She has an amazing ability to make people feel at home," said Chambers.
Chamber’s mother-in-law is a 21-year breast cancer survivor, and recently two of Chamber’s closest friends have finished treatment and are cancer free
"It feels really good -- the idea of turning music into awareness and healing. The outpouring of stories and sharing that has come back to me about struggles and survivors’ stories has been sort of overwhelming, and really cathartic for many. I am so happy to be involved in this awareness and hopefully a total cure for this disease that affects so many.”
With the fundraiser, Chambers would like to help researchers make a difference in breast cancer research. SGKO is an organization that provides research, education, grants that provide financial and emotional assistance and an advocacy group for better breast cancer policy.
Last year, SGKO community grants provided financial and social support for more than 50,000 families affected by breast cancer.
Chambers is originally from Shoreline and went to Shorecrest High. She spent time in New York writing and studying and has a bachelors degree in English. For the last three years, Chambers has been living in North Ballard.
Chambers said she grew up listing to Billy Joel, Joni Mitchell and James Taylor.
“Singing just started naturally when I was a kid and led into voice lessons, theatre and choir. I sang other peoples’ material, and that was fulfilling for a while, but then I realized that I wanted to bridge my writing with my own singing. It’s taken me a while for me to see what that transition will be, and I’m really excited about this new album.”
Eric Eagle (Jesse Sykes) of Seattle's Skoor Sound produced the album, "Everything Woman," and Hans Teuber made the musical arrangement. The album features other musicians like Keith Lowe (Fiona Apple), Jeff Feilder(Amy Ray), Michael Stegner, Steve Moore(Sufjan Stevens), and Al Keith.
The album is a blending of groove and folk-pop with Chamber’s own writing.
“ I tend to write songs that are narrative. A lot of them are about relationships and love. I would say there are some soul elements in some songs and folk elements in others. I try to have that glimmer of hope at the end.”
“There’s some retrospect writing about my time in New York and relationships, but mainly its just stuff that pops into my head. …The title track was kind of an outlier for a while and I added it late in the process. It’s kinds of mash up of strong women that I know and allowing yourself to be vulnerable yet strong”
In addition to Chamber’s songs, there is also a rendition of Beck’s “Eyes That Say I Love You. ” The song has already caught the attention of The Seattle Weekly as the top staff pick for summer singles not to miss.
“It means a lot to have something to offer that can translate to sales and help saves lives with research. It’s really a special thing for me.”
