The Psychic View – What Dreams Are Made Of

Dreams have fascinated us from the beginning. Traditionally, profound importance was attached to them, and any who might successfully interpret their hidden meaning came to be highly regarded. In the Old Testament, Joseph, a prisoner in Egypt, was appointed the Pharaoh’s chief advisor after solving the puzzle of that ruler’s perplexing visions. Abraham Lincoln, it is reported, dreamed of seeing himself in a coffin several days before his assassination. News stories have even told of those who have passed away, returning to loved ones in a dream with winning lottery numbers! But whether harbingers of things to come, or mere ‘noise’ from our subconscious, luminaries from Shakespeare to Freud have been endlessly fascinated by them.
I, like everyone else, dream nightly…while seldom recalling the details. Occasionally, however, I am visited by what I consider profound, ‘teaching dreams’ that allow me to learn something of intrinsic value. One very recent ‘vision’ had a particularly resonant impact.
In brief, the dream goes as follows: my nephew and his family were in Seattle for the summer. I went to visit them, but saw their house was not their ‘real’ one, but instead a place where a baby shower had been held for his wife when she was expecting her first child years before.
Upon entering, I encountered my family members one by one, but soon understood something very odd was occurring: I was, in fact, not seeing them as they are now, but instead as they appeared three years past! This realization aroused a great sense of awe within me. I immediately sought to describe what was happening, but my listeners responded only with a good-natured rolling of the eyes. Yet, I KNEW it was true.
During my dream-state, I did not feel I had ‘gone back in time’…rather, I was being shown that past, present, and future existed in parallel dimensions, and that we might have access to those simultaneous realities and move between them! But spirited attempts to describe this stunning revelation to my family (both during the dream and afterwards) were met with amused indifference.
When I awoke, I felt moved and thrilled. Of course, this may have been ‘only a dream’…yet it seemed so much more! The definition of ‘time’ is always open to speculation. We know scientifically that, if we travel at the speed of light, ‘time’ will slow down for the traveler, but continue its ‘normal’ pace for those left behind. When we gaze up at the stars, we are, in fact, looking millions of years into the ‘past’…since it takes eons for their light to reach us. Time may seem to drag in slow motion, or zoom by at incredible speed. Does it ‘exist’ at all, or is it merely a human construct, helping us to shape ‘reality’ into something more fathomable? There are multiple mysteries involved and I am quite open to diverse interpretations, for they all surely contribute to the whole.
Meanwhile, as Prospero reminds us in Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’… ‘we are such stuff as dreams are made on’ and our dreams may gift us with captivating treasures if we are only objective enough to consider them.
