It's time to celebrate the efforts of volunteers, donors and organizers with the Stuff the Bus Bash set for July 23 in the White Center Headquarters of WestSide Baby.
Local nonprofit WestSide Baby will be making a fun difference to the lives of local babies in need at their upcoming Stuff the Bus Bash, celebrating the closing weeks of Seattle’s largest diaper drive. The fun family event, which takes place on July 23rd will be an outdoor celebration for the whole family, featuring food, entertainment, trike races, a diaper dash, and more, takes place to coincide with White Center’s Jubilee Days. The price of admission is a package (or box) of diapers for local kids in need.
1 in 3 US families struggle to afford diapers for their babies. In King County alone there are 10,000 children aged under 3 years old living below the federal poverty level. Since 2001 WestSide Baby has grown to provide families in need in Western King County with diapers and more to keep their babies safe, warm and dry. In 2016, they provided local families with over 1.4 million diapers.
WestSide Baby’s Executive Director Nancy Woodland says: “For many families, diapers are prohibitively expensive. Diapers are not covered by government aid programs such as food stamps, forcing families to choose between paying for diapers or paying bills. In addition, the expense of diapers can affect more than just a baby’s hygiene. For example, most day care centers won’t take a child without a day’s supply of diapers, which means that for parents who can’t afford them, a missed day of day care for baby means a missed day of work or training for them.”
The month-long diaper drive seeks to gather 300,000 diapers. There’s still time to get involved by hosting a diaper drive, in person or even online, donating diapers at local branches of HomeStreet Bank and Banner Bank, or bringing diapers to the WestSide Baby Stuff the Bus Bash. The most requested sizes of diapers are sizes 4,5,6 and pull-ups in sizes 3T-4T and 4T-5T.
