Burglar takes cigarettes
When officers arrived in the 700 block of NW Market St. around 2:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10, they found a giant steel burglar gate across the front door. They noticed a front window was broken and that shattered glass covered the ground. The key-holder for the gate came, and officers searched for suspects inside the store, finding none. The owners checked the store to determine what was stolen. They said about $5,000 worth of cigarettes were missing. They estimated that it would cost about $2,000 to replace the shattered window. The owners had surveillance footage and were able to see a man, wearing a black coat and khaki paints jump over the counter to steal the cigarettes. Officers were not able to find any fingerprints. Photos of the scene and a copy of the surveillance footage were uploaded into evidence.
Woman deters prowler
Around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9, officers were dispatched to the 600 block of NW 76 St to respond to a call about a prowler that occurred the day before. The woman who called explained that around 6 a.m. she was using the restroom and left the door open. Suddenly, she saw a beam from a flashlight shine into her kitchen from a rear door. She did not hear any noise but, moments later, saw a human figure enter the kitchen. She yelled and the person quickly turned around and left. Because it was dark, the woman did not see the figure well. She did not notice any damage to her door and thought that she may have left it unlocked.
