Theft ring busted
In a theft ring operated out of the Burien area, local thieves were paid to steal mundane items, such as razor blades, laundry detergent and bath products. Those items were resold to other stores and in some cases shipped to Cambodia inside automobiles. King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg says many of the thieves were drug addicts who were paid pennies on the dollar for the goods they stole. The prosecutor estimates the loss to retailers in the Burien and Normandy Park areas at $4.8 million over ten months. Sarah Kong, 40, and Chanthou Rim, 38 are each charged with almost a dozen felony counts.
Eggs and cement used to vandalize neighborhood
Deputies were called to investigate a vandalism report in the neighborhood of the 15000 block of 5th Lane South. One neighbor's vehicle had eggs thrown at it and scratches in a complete circle caused by cement. It appeared that wet cement was applied to the vehicle and had hardened when the owner found it. The cement covered most of the windows, door handles and license plates along with damage to the paint. There was a front load tractor that also had eggs placed down the exhaust pipe. Several homes in the area had cement smeared on the doors and windows as well as eggs thrown at them. One of the neighbors has video surveillance set up and is reviewing the video to see if any information is available on the suspect(s).
Medical emergency while driving
A woman driving in the 12800 block of 24th Ave. South caused a minor accident due to a medical emergency. She was driving her vehicle when she suddenly had a seizure. This caused her vehicle to bump into another vehicle. A homeowner in the area had to break out her rear window in order to put the vehicle in park and turn off the engine. The homeowner happened to be an off duty firefighter and was able to stabilize the woman until medics arrived.
President Obama pardons Burien man
Randy E. Dyer, 62, of Burien was pardoned May 20 by President Barack Obama. Dyer was sentenced to five years in prison in 1975 after being charged with conspiracy to import marijuana (hashish,) conspiracy to remove baggage from the custody of the U.S, Customs Service and conveying false information concerning an attempt to damage a civil aircraft. In 1972, a Dyer co-conspirator called in a bomb threat to Sea-Tac International Airport as a diversionary tactic in order to steal hashish from an airport storage area.
