Highline Schools sponsoring sports safety clinic

Highline School District Athletics is hosting a free Sports Safety Clinic sponsored by Safe Kids Seattle Coalition at the Mt. Rainier High School Theatre on Thursday, June 9 from 3-6 p.m. (breaks and healthy snacks provided).
NOTE: WIAA Coaches' Standards Hours will be awarded to individuals attending the clinic AND upon completion, participants will receive a certificate verifying concussion training (good for two years).

Lead presenter is nationally known brain injury expert, Dr. Stanley Herring. Dr. Herring will be joined by other medical professionals to discuss information about concussion diagnosis and management, lessons on proper hydration and how to prevent injuries, components of a pre-participation physical exam and additional information relative to individuals working with youth sports programs. Time to ask questions of the experts will also be part of the program.

· Dr. Herring is Co-Medical Director of Seattle Sports Concussion Program, a partnership between UW Medicine and Seattle Children's Hospital.
· He is a team physician for the Seattle Seahawks, Seattle Mariners and a consultant to the UW Sports Medicine Program and the Seattle Storm.

Each participant will receive a Concussion Toolkit courtesy of the Brain Injury Association of Washington. There is no cost to the district for this presentation due to grant dollars from Safe Kids Seattle, coordinated by Lorena Chavez. Concussion Toolkits will be made available by Executive Director, Deborah Crawley, who has teamed up with Lorena's group to provide materials and support throughout the Region.
Bio for Safe Sport Spokesperson & Lead Presenter, Dr. Stanley Herring:
Dr. Stanley Herring is UW clinical professor in the Departments of Rehabilitation Medicine, Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, and Neurological Surgery. He is director of Spine, Sports and Musculoskeletal Medicine for the UW Medicine Health System and co-medical director of the Seattle Sports Concussion Program, a partnership between UW Medicine and Seattle Children's. He specializes in non-operative musculoskeletal and sports medicine, with a particular interest in disorders of the spine and sports concussion. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and went on to complete his residency at the UW Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. He is board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and electrodiagnostic medicine. Dr. Herring is a team physician for the Seattle Seahawks, Seattle Mariners and a consultant to the UW Sports Medicine Program and the Seattle Storm. He serves as a member of the NFL's Head, Neck and Spine Committee, and he was a major contributor to the effort to pass the Zackery Lystedt Law in Washington state. He remains very active in working for similar legislation in all fifty states and the District of Columbia. In addition, Dr. Herring is a frequent national and international speaker on a variety of physiatric and sports medicine topics.
