Discover Burien will be hosting their 2012 Annual Awards Dinner and Silent Auction
Fundraiser March 2, 2012 at the Burien Community Center (14700 6th Ave SW, Burien) from 6 – 10 pm.

Tickets can be purchased for $35 in advance or $50 at the door.

The 2012 Leadership awards were selected from nominations from the community and voted upon by
the Discover Burien Board of Directors. The award recipients are as follows (in no particular order).

 Business Leader of the Year – Dan House, Tin Room/Tin Theater
 Student Leader of the Year – Elliott Newsom, Highline High School
 Discover Burien Volunteer of the Year – Margie Gibb
 Team Clean Sweep Recognition of the Year – Doug Query
 Non-Profit Leader of the Year – Highline Schools Foundation

About Business Leader of the Year, Dan House, Tin Room/Tin Theater; Sometimes better know as “Dan the Sausage Man” (from his nominator) “Dan House Tin Room Bar Old Burien No one has done more for the town of Burien than Dan House. He opened a great bar/restaurant in old Burien, making it a destination and encouraging more businesses in and around Burien. He has sponsored many
neighborhood activities and fund raisers, cleanup projects, school activities, etc. He is an "Idea Man" and
has helped keep things going, in spite of hard times for businesses, including his, and takes great care of
his employees and patrons.”

About Student Leader of the Year, Elliott Newsom, Highline High School; (quote from Elliott Newsom) “I feel as though kids need stronger role models. Someone they can count on being there
for them. A place where students can get away to, and know how it feels to do good things for one another. There are places that allow students to do this, but many kids do not go because they are concerned about what their peers will think of them. I think getting information out to kids each day about community service, youth programs, and religious groups will help them find opportunities to feel better about themselves. That is what I think our community needs for kids today. Places and opportunities to respect each other, do good deeds, and always receive a positive message!”

About Discover Burien Volunteer of the Year, Margie Gibb; Margie has been a volunteer with Discover Burien since 2002/2003. She was one of the founding Board members and today spends most of her volunteer time helping at the Burien Farmers Market.

About Team Clean Sweep Recognition of the Year, Doug Query; Doug has been with Team Clean Sweep since 2004 and is one of the original members.

About Non-Profit Leader of the Year – Highline Schools Foundation; Highline Schools Foundation serves all public school students in Sea-Tac, White Center, Des Moines, Boulevard Park, Burien and Normandy Park. With over 18,000 students in the district, started in 1999 The Highline Schools
Foundation has grown to be an critical support system for our schools—funding things that continue to
be cut out of the State’s budget for education—including: Arts Programs, Athletic Participation, College
Scholarships, Support for Homeless Students and their Families, Community Outreach and a community
outreach program called Project PROMise, which provides all the needed items for young girls to attend
prom. All of this is supported by the Foundation and its multiple volunteers.
