Prison inmates threaten Burien woman accused of starving her 2-month-old son
Katherine A. Mattern, the 23-year-old Burien woman accused of starving her 2-month-old son, did not appear for arraignment Thursday, June 14, because of concerns about her safety. She has been held in protective custody at the King County Jail since shortly after her June 5 arrest because other female inmates have threatened her, said King County Jail Capt. Lisaye Manning.
Mattern is being housed in a single-person cell. Mattern has been charged with criminal mistreatment.
On May 15, doctors at Seattle Children's Hospital contacted the King County Sheriff's Office to report concerns that Mattern's younger child was in poor health, charges said, and that the baby had lost weight and was suffering from scabies. Mattern faces up to five years in prison if convicted. Both children have been removed from Mattern and are in state care, according to state child welfare officials.
Tukwila fire official under internal investigation
A Tukwila fire official is under internal investigation for an alleged road rage incident while driving a department vehicle. A husband and wife, Anna and Andrew Rice, said he was aggressive toward them for half an hour as they were driving home over Snoqualmie Pass. The Rices said the driver tailgated them for miles and swerved into their lane, forcing them onto the shoulder. The Rices phoned 911, but troopers never caught up with them.
The Rices learned the driver is an official with the Tukwila Fire Department who reported a dispute to his superiors. The fire chief said his staff member's account is "180 degrees different than the Rice's." In a statement, the fire chief wrote: "We take the allegations very seriously. We have a code of ethics and a code of conduct. We are still conducting a deep and thorough investigation into this incident." An assistant chief is investigating and plans to meet with the Rices.
