"Buy it in BURIEN" begins Saturday; Celebrate national "Small Business Saturday"
Bumbershoot Books in Burien, pictured, was one of the busy independent retail shops that did well on "Small Business Saturday" Nov. 24, two days after Thanksgiving, and one day following Black Friday. Small shops nationwide, & Discover Burien here, encouraged shoppers to spend locally & called Saturday the official start of "Buy It In BURIEN". L-R are Janna Silverstein, Elizabeth Bourne, & owner Jessica Gendreau. Silverstein & Bourne observed crowded stores & said shop owners on 152nd told them Saturday was much busier than Friday & that some customers mentioned "Small Business Saturday" at the checkout. Gendreau said some customers told her they made an effort to shop locally.

The "Small Business Saturday" campaign, established nationally in 2010, focuses on social networking to get traffic into small businesses between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, two of the busiest shopping days of the year. Numerous communities around the country are promoting Saturday, Nov. 24, as an opportunity for holiday shoppers to buy from their local mom & pop stores, the day after many hit the malls.
