The Fred Meyer at 14300 1st Ave S. in Burien was granted a zoning permit to expand into the former One Stop Sub Shop located within its existing structure on the southwest corner. Other updates will be made, called a "refresh". Also, the store's fuel station expansion was just completed, on Nov. 16.
"We went from being able to pump 10 vehicles at once to 18 at once," said Burien Fred Meyer Store Director, Randy Welk. "We added four new pumps, double-sided, for eight more cars. We now have an Additech system for drivers to put in a fuel cleaning additive."
According to the Additech website, "Additech’s system blends specialty fuel additives into fuel as it is pumped. These specially blended fuel system products clean vital engine parts as consumers drive."
"Flow of traffic has been a lot better with the extra pumps, and we can't wait until the (road) project along 1st Avenue is done," Welk said.
"The expansion is going to become our coffee shop with added seating area and we'll also be expanding our beverage center with a milkshake machine, custom pop machine, a whole bunch of beverage options, like other Fred Meyer stores have," he said. "Some of this is tentative, subject to change, but we plan to start work in April, to be complete by November, 2013. We will refresh everything throughout the store. There is definitely a lot of work involved."
Of the Christmas season, he assed, "Business is going really well. This has always been a strong location, and continues to be."
"This was a routine permit process," said Kirk Gentile, Building Inspector Plans Examiner, City of Burien. "They've been called for pickup on that permit and then they can begin. This is an interior remodel of the existing shop with minor exterior changes. A little bit of ADA compliance is going to be upgraded outside including a new single door at a side entrance into the expanded area, including a new accessible ramp."
Some fixture changes and layout reconfiguration are also planned, but the grocery, garden center, and other retail departments will remain the same.
