In the first half of a girls-boys basketball doubleheader at Seattle Christian on Friday, Dec. 21, the Warrior girls overcame a 17-point deficit to send the game into overtime before climbing to a 47-45 overtime Nisqually League win against Life Christian (Tacoma).
Life Christian took control to establish a 26-20 halftime lead on the strength of 10-for-23 shooting from the field versus the Seattle Christian 8-for-27.
Late in the third quarter, the Warriors trailed, 39-22, but a tough, slashing defense and a mighty offensive rebounding effort brought the Warriors within 41-39 with six seconds left in the fourth quarter at which time Mariah May was fouled.
Performing well under pressure, May converted two free throws to send the fray into overtime where SCS finally prevailed.
Seattle Christian failed to improve its shooting percentage (8-of-36) in the second half, but limited the Eagles to 5-of-23 shooting on the preponderance of rebounds. SCS corralled 37 rebounds out of a total of 64. Life Christian had 34 total rebounds. The offensive board domination aided a 24-7 advantage in second chance points for the Warriors. Overtime shooting favored SCS (2-for-4 against 1-for-5)
Four players scored in double figures for Seattle Christian, but every scorer was critical on this night.
Alayna Gleason scored 14 points with 18 rebounds. Aly Kaler notched 11 points which was matched by May. In addition, May collared 11 offensive rebounds out of her total of 17. Madelyn Weber rose to the occasion for nine points and 11 rebounds. Weber grabbed eight offensive boards while also blocking six shots and totaling four steals. Taelor Wilhoite contributed two points. Molli Ronish dealt out six assists.
For Life Christian, Johnnise Moore led the way on 15 points and seven rebounds before fouling out. Katie Anderson scored 12 and Maddy Long added nine.
