UPDATE
Highline Forward Bandon Baker took the opening Tip Off but that was as close as the Pirates would get.
The pirates didn’t score until the 2:03 mark in the game and found themselves down 4-2.
Both teams struggled offensively in the first but not because the respective defenses were that good. It felt like both teams were cautiously testing each other. At the end of one the score was 14-7 Kennedy.
In the second period the Lancers found a rhythm offensively, and defensively began to realize Highlines weakness in their inability to penetrate for points. The Pirates looked sharp in the pre-game warm up but that didn’t translate into offense during regulation mostly because of Kennedy’s size in the front court.
The lancers clogged the lanes with 6’6” Point Guard Cole Madison and 6’4” Wing Josh Sierhuis. This forced Highline to shoot, uncomfortably, from the perimeter. Madison and Sierhuis scooped up nearly every miss shot and pushed the ball up court to the waiting hands of Anthony McClusky and Mitch Sasonoff who, after a sluggish first period found their game and began to stretch the Lancers lead.
When a team is being severely beaten on their home court tempers can flair. Half way through the third period and with Highline down by 30 points Pirate Forward Seta Kotoisuva preformed a wrestling style takedown of Lancers Guard James Jolly trying to strip the ball from the 6’1” Guard. A tumbling Kotoisuva and Jolly rolled around on the court for several seconds before team mates could separate them. Astoundingly the result was a technical foul on Kennedy. Highlines inability to score was highlighted when captain Eric Anderson went to the free throw line to shoot two free shots off the technical, failed to make both.
At the end of three Kennedy was in firm control 50-23.
