Highline Schools Foundation Gold Star Awards BASH honored outstanding teachers, volunteers, alumni, staff of Highline Schools at the Production House in Burien. The Highline Schools Foundation presented the second annual Gold Star Awards BASH, a red-carpet style event with the five Gold Star Award winners at the Production Shop in Burien Thursday night, March 21. The event was emceed by Rep. Dave Upthegrove of the 33rd legislative district. Ashley Fosberg, Executive Director at Highline Schools Foundation, also hosted, and helped organize the evening.
There were 10 Outstanding Administrator Nominees and Chris Larsen, Principal, Seahurst Elementary School, won.
There were 19 Outstanding Classified or Professional Support Staff Nominees, and Sheri Sutliff, Chinook Middle School, won.
Of some 32 Outstanding Teacher Nominees, the popular Lana Baroudi, Bow Lake Elementary School, took that honor.
Among seven Outstanding Volunteer Nominees, Sheri Healy of Mount Rainier High School, Pacific Middle School, and Marvista Elementary School won. Her husband, Dean, accepted the award.
Dan Satterberg, King County Prosecuting Attorney and a product of Highline Schools. received the Highline Alumnus award.
Said Satterberg, "I am a proud product of the Highline School. I remember every school teacher I ever had. I'm in awe at everything you do. I know the kids are challenging but every day you make a difference in our community. I person who drops out of high school is five times more likely to go to prison than a person who graduates from high school. That high school degree is such a protective blanket for that individual and for the community, so what you are doing is crime prevention and allowing me to have a little more time with my band."
His rock band is the "Approximations."
Prior to the awards, the audience was treated to a take-off of the Match Game TV show hosted by DJ Taj Franke. He sensed the audience getting nervous and assured them this was "Match Game, not "The Dating Game" which earned him some laughs, and sighs of relief.
The three "celebrity" contestants, including Highline Schools Superintendent, Dr. Susan Enfield, Sylvester Middle School Principal Vicki Fisher, and Highline Schools Foundation Trustee Anthony O'Neil had to fill a word in a sentence in an attempt to match an answer by two contestants, who were teachers, Jamie Soule, Mar Vista 3rd grade, and Kristi Fowler, 7th grade language arts teacher at Cascade.
The evening closed when raffle winner, and nominee, Stacie Grage, Support Staffer at North Hill and Seahurst elementary schools won a ticket anywhere United Airlines flies in America or Mexico. She told the Highline Times she would be heading off to Hawaii.
