Burien sizzles this weekend

Father’s Day weekend heats up with a sizzling car show, chili cook-off, carnival and Band-a-Palooza in downtown Burien June 13 through 16. Presented by the nonprofit Discover Burien Association, the events are affiliated with the city of Burien’s Wild Strawberry Festival June 15 and 16.

New this year, Discover Burien’s Band-a-Palooza brings the mighty sound of nine full-fledged Pacific Northwest symphonic bands to the strawberry festival June 15 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Besides Band-a-Palooza on the Town Square Stage, the festival is hopping with live entertainment of every stripe, food and more.
Get thrilled, chilled or gently entertained during Spring Carnival Days from Thursday, June 13 through Sunday, June 16. Davis Shows’ full carnival operates June 13 and June 14 from 3 p.m. to close and June 15 and June 16 from 11 a.m. to close. The carnival closes each day when attendance becomes too light.
More than 200 buffed up beauties will demonstrate the infinite variety of the automotive era during the free annual Burien Father’s Day Car Show Sunday, June 16. The event, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., also features ‘50s and ‘60s tunes spun by a disk jockey plus a chili cook-off.
Check out which vehicles take first place in nine categories: Mayor’s Choice, Best Project Car, Best Truck, Most Likely To Go On A Date In, People’s Choice, Best Interior, Auto Dealers’ Choice, Best Paint Job, and Oldest & Original.
From noon to 2 p.m., sample lip-smacking chili cooked up by contestants in the Annual Chili Cook-Off. The chili conquering first place walks away with $150 plus a traveling trophy. Second place will receive $75 and third place $40.

Register on Father’s Day for $20 between 8 and 10 a.m. at Southwest 152nd Street and Ambaum Boulevard Southwest. 50/50 raffle tickets can be purchased with preregistration or on Father’s Day at the Discover Burien booth. Tickets are $1 or 7 for $5.
Chili Cook-Off teams must preregister for $25. Registration forms and details are posted at www.discoverburien.com.
Burien Toyota and Burien Chevrolet are sponsoring Band-a-Palooza. Burien Nissan, Burien Chevrolet, Burien Toyota and Siler Licensing Agency, Inc. are the car show’s primary sponsors. Jim Coleman, DDS, and Taco Time are sponsoring the Chili Cook-Off.
Registration fees and raffle proceeds go toward the costs of Discover Burien’s events and organization. Discover Burien is a nonprofit that works on economic development, education and promotion of the city.
All events, including the festival, center on Burien Town Square Park at Southwest 152nd Street and Fifth Place Southwest in downtown Burien. Cars will line Southwest 152nd Street between Fourth Avenue Southwest and Eighth Avenue Southwest, plus a portion of Sixth Avenue Southwest.
